OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_took Terah DOM Abram his/its_son and_DOM Lōţ the_son of_Ḩārān the_son his/its_son and_DOM Sarai his/its_daughter-in-law the_wife of_Abram his/its_son and_they_went_out with_them from_Ur of_[the]_ones_from_Kasdiy to_go towards_land of_Kinaˊan and_they_came to Ḩārān and_they_lived there.

OET (OET-RV)Then one day, Terah gathered his son Abram and his grandson Lot (who was Haran’s son), and his daughter-in-law Sarai (who was Abram’s wife), and they all left from the city of Ur (where the Chaldeans lived), to travel to the region of Canaan, but when they arrived at the city of Haran, they decided to live there.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

וַיִּקַּ֨ח תֶּ֜רַח

and=he/it_took Terah

Consider what is the best way to begin this new paragraph in your language. Alternate translation: “One day, Terah called together”

אֶת אַבְרָ֣ם בְּנ֗וֹ

DOM Avram his/its=son

Make sure it is clear in your translation of this phrase that his son refers to Abram, not another person.

וְאֶת ל֤וֹט בֶּן הָרָן֙ בֶּן בְּנ֔וֹ

and=DOM Lōţ son_of Ḩārān son_of his/its=son

The phrases “Lot,” “Haran’s son,” and his son’s son all refer to Lot. Make sure that is clear in your translation and that it does not sound like three people.

וְאֵת֙ שָׂרַ֣י כַּלָּת֔וֹ

and=DOM Sarai his/its=daughter-in-law

The phrases “Sarai,” “his daughter-in-law,” and the wife of his son Abram all refer to Sarai. Make sure that is clear in your translation.

וַיֵּצְא֨וּ אִתָּ֜ם

and=they_went_out with=them

Consider whether or not it is better in your language to begin a new sentence here. Alternate translation: “and all of them set out together” or “Then they all left”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

מֵא֣וּר

from=Ur

See the note at Gen 10:19 about how to translate the names of cities. Alternate translation: “from Ur City”

כַּשְׂדִּ֗ים

Kasdim

See how you translated this phrase in verse 28. Alternate translation: “of the Chaldeans” or “where the Kasdim people lived”

לָלֶ֨כֶת֙ אַ֣רְצָה כְּנַ֔עַן

to=go towards=land Kanaan

Alternate translation: “to go to the region of Canaan.” or “to go to Canaan Land.”

וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ עַד חָרָ֖ן

and=they_came until Ḩārān

The city of Haran was not in the land of Canaan, rather it was around 450 kilometers (280 miles) northeast of there. Alternate translation: “But on the way there, they came to the city of Haran, and” or “But along the way, when they stopped at the city of Haran,”

וַיֵּ֥שְׁבוּ שָֽׁם

and=they_lived there

Alternate translation: “they stayed there instead.” or “they decided to settle there instead.”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:31 Terah took: The text is clear that Abram’s departure from Ur was prompted by God’s calling (see study note on 11:28), but the event is described from Terah’s perspective, in keeping with the patriarchy of ancient Near Eastern culture. This cultural deference to the oldest male is evidently why Abram did not continue on to Canaan by himself at this time (see Acts 7:2-4).
• Haran was 550 miles northwest of Ur, near the Syrian-Turkish border. Despite the similar name, there is no connection with Terah’s son Haran, who had died in Ur (11:28).
• Haran means “caravan.” Ancient commercial routes converged there, making it a key site for trade.
• Haran was also well known for the moon worship to which Terah’s family was apparently devoted (see study note on 11:29).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
