22:2 Note: We read one or more accents in L differently than BHS. Often this notation indicates a typographical error in BHS.

OET (OET-RV) “Take your son Yitshak who you love, your only son,” God commanded him, “and go to the Moriah region and sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I’ll point out to you.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-quotations

וַיֹּ֡אמֶר

and=he/it_said

Translate this quote margin in a way that fits this context well. Alternate translation: “Then God said to him,” or “Then God told him,”

קַח נָ֠א אֶת בִּנְךָ֨

take now DOM son,your

See how you translated “please” when God is talking to a person in Gen 13:14; 15:5. Your translation of take here should not imply the use of force. See how you translated “took” in Gen 11:31 and 12:5.

אֶת יְחִֽידְךָ֤ אֲשֶׁר אָהַ֨בְתָּ֙ אֶת יִצְחָ֔ק

DOM DOM only,your which/who love DOM Yiʦḩāq/(Isaac)

This phrase repeats part of the previous phrase in order to emphasize it. Do what is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “yes your only son Isaac whom you love,”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְלֶךְ לְךָ֔

and,go to/for=yourself(m)

It is understood that he was to take Isaac with him. If this is not clear in your language, you could make that information explicit. Alternate translation: “and go with him”

Note 3 topic: translate-names

אֶל אֶ֖רֶץ הַמֹּרִיָּ֑ה

to/towards earth/land the,Moriah

Alternate translation: “to the region called Moriah,” or “to the Moriah Region,”

וְהַעֲלֵ֤הוּ שָׁם֙ לְעֹלָ֔ה

and,offer,him there as,burnt_offering

Consider whether or not it is better in your language to begin a new sentence here. See how you translated a similar phrase in Gen 8:20. Alternate translation: “and offer him there to me as a burnt offering” or “There you are to burn him up on an altar as a offering to me,”

עַ֚ל אַחַ֣ד הֶֽהָרִ֔ים

on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in one the,mountains

Alternate translation: “on top of one of the mountains” or “on top of a mountain”

אֲשֶׁ֖ר אֹמַ֥ר אֵלֶֽיךָ

which/who tell about,you

Alternate translation: “that I will point out to you.”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

22:2 Obedience to God’s earlier call (12:1-3) was rewarded with great blessing; now Abraham had the opportunity to show even greater obedience.
• Take your son . . . Isaac, whom you love so much: By this detailed description of Isaac, God reminded Abraham that the young man was his beloved son, and intensified his awareness of the cost of the sacrifice.
• The name Moriah is explained by the Chronicler (2 Chr 3:1) as the place of the later Temple Mount in Jerusalem.
• Go: By wording the command in this way, God helped Abraham to obey by recalling his former call (cp. 12:1-3).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.
