OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_called the_humankind the_name his/its_wife/woman Ḩavvāh/(Eve) if/because she she_was the_mother of_every living_[person].

OET (OET-RV)Then the man named his wife ‘Havvah(which means ‘living’) because she would become the mother of all future people.

uW Translation Notes:

וַיִּקְרָ֧א הָֽאָדָ֛ם שֵׁ֥ם אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ

and=he/it_called the=humankind name_of his/its=wife/woman

Some translations use Adam’s name here because he is naming Eve. See what you did in verse 17. Alternate translation: “Then Adam called his wife” or “Then the man gave his wife the name”

Note 1 topic: translate-names

חַוָּ֑ה

Ḩavvāh/(Eve)

If you include the meaning of Eve’s name in your translation or in a footnote, make sure it is similar to the word in the following clause that has the same meaning (living), so that it is clear why Eve was given that name. The meaning of names is important in the Hebrew language, and this translation issue occurs frequently in the book of Genesis.

כִּ֛י

that/for/because/then/when

Consider whether or not it is better in your language to begin a new sentence here. Alternate translation: “He did that because”

הִ֥וא הָֽיְתָ֖ה אֵ֥ם

who/which she/it_was mother_of

Alternate translation: “she would be the ancestor of”

כָּל חָֽי

all/each/any/every living_(creature)

Alternate translation: “all the people who would ever live.”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

3:20 Eve (Hebrew khawah) sounds like a Hebrew term (khayah) that means “to give life.” Following God’s pronouncement of Adam’s impending death (3:19), Adam expressed hope by giving Eve a name associated with life. Adam’s naming of Eve in such close proximity to 3:16 may suggest that the narrator views it as Adam’s first act of ruling over the woman after the Fall (see study note on 2:19-20).
