TSNTyndale Study Notes:

3:16 Judgment falls on the woman’s unique role of childbearing and on her relationship with her husband.
• And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you: The marriage relationship now included an element of antagonism rather than just security and fulfillment. New life in Christ allows for the restoration of a man and a woman’s marriage relationship (Eph 5:18-32; cp. Matt 20:25-28).

TTNTyndale Theme Notes:

The Fall

Genesis 3 describes how human moral innocence collapsed through rebellion. What God declared as “very good” (Gen 1:31) was no longer completely so. Man and woman ate the fruit that promised knowledge of good and evil, thus breaking God’s command (2:16-17) and attempting to become like God (see 3:5). In doing so, they fell from their sinless state. Alienated from God, one another, and creation, they also became subject to death.

Consequently, all humans are “fallen”—born in sin, predisposed to sin (Gen 8:21; Job 4:17-21; Pss 51:5; 103:10; 143:2; Prov 20:9), and awaiting death. When the first man and woman ate the fruit in disobedience to God, they forfeited their own innocence and that of their children, the entire human race (Rom 5:12-14; 1 Cor 15:21-22, 45-49). The expression “original sin” denotes sin’s complete, universal infiltration into individual lives and human society as a result of human rebellion. As people yield to their inherited predisposition to sin, they become responsible for their own wrongdoing (Eccl 7:20; Rom 3:23).

The first man, Adam, introduced sin, but the “second Adam,” Jesus Christ, is sin’s antidote (1 Cor 15:3; 2 Cor 5:21). When Christ died as Redeemer, he made God’s salvation from sin available to all (John 3:16; Rom 1:16).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

אֶֽל הָאִשָּׁ֣ה אָמַ֗ר

to/near the=woman he/it_had_said

In the Hebrew text, “to the woman” comes first in this sentence, to emphasize her. Do what is natural in your language. Also consider what is the best way to refer to God here in your language. Alternate translation: “Then he said to the woman,” or “Then Yahweh God turned to the woman and said to her,”

הַרְבָּ֤ה אַרְבֶּה֙ עִצְּבוֹנֵ֣ךְ

to_increase I_will_increase your(fs)=worries/pain

Alternate translation: “I will cause you to have much pain” or “I will cause it to be very painful”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

בְּעֶ֖צֶב תֵּֽלְדִ֣י בָנִ֑ים

in=earthen_vessel//painful_toll you(fs)_will_give_birth_to children

This clause is the second part of a parallelism, which emphasizes the pain and suffering that women will experience when they bear children. If possible, it is best to keep both parts of the parallelism in your translation. Alternate translation: “yes you will suffer much pain when you give birth.” or “yes bearing children will be very painful for you.”

וְאֶל אִישֵׁךְ֙ תְּשׁ֣וּקָתֵ֔ךְ

and=near/to your(fs)=man/husband your(fs)=longing/desire

The Hebrew text is ambiguous here, because the conjunctions and the idiom your desire will be for your husband are all ambiguous in this context. The text could mean: (1) “Yet/But you will still desire/long to be with your husband, and he …”, which is similar to what desire means in Song of Songs 7:10; or (2) “Besides that, you will desire/want to control your husband, but he …”, which is similar to what desire means in Gen 4:7. The interpretation that is not followed in your translation could be put in a footnote.

וְה֖וּא יִמְשָׁל בָּֽךְ

and=he he/it_will_rule on/over=you(fs)

See how you translated rule over in Gen 1:18. It may be necessary to translate this term differently here because of the negative context of the curse and the consequences of sin. Alternate translation: “and he will control you.” or “and he will lord it over you.”
