OET (OET-LV)And_they_heard DOM the_sound of_YHWH god walking_about in_the_garden to/for_wind/breath/spirit the_day and_he/it_hid_himself/itself the_humankind and_his/its_woman/wife from_before YHWH god in_the_middle the_tree[s] the_garden.

OET (OET-RV)Late that afternoon, during the cool time of the day, the man and his wife heard Yahweh God’s voice as he walked in the garden, but they hid from him behind some trees in the garden,

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֞וּ

and=they_heard

For some languages it may be clearer and more natural to put the noun phrase the man and his wife here and then use a pronoun (they) later in this sentence. Do what is best in your language. Alternate translation: “Then the man and his wife heard”

אֶת ק֨וֹל יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהִ֛ים מִתְהַלֵּ֥ךְ

DOM sound/voice YHWH ʼElohīm walking_around/wandering

This phrase can refer to the sound of God’s footsteps or to the sound of his voice. Either meaning fits the context well and is followed by many translations.

בַּגָּ֖ן

in_the=garden

Alternate translation: “around in the garden” or “through the garden”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

לְר֣וּחַ הַיּ֑וֹם

to/for=wind/breath/spirit the=day

This idiom refers to the late afternoon or early evening when there is a breeze blowing and it is cooler. For some languages it is more natural to put this time phrase at the beginning of the sentence. Do what is best in your language. Alternate translation: “late in the afternoon in the breezy time of the day,” or “late that day when there was a cool breeze blowing,”

Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns

וַיִּתְחַבֵּ֨א הָֽאָדָ֜ם וְאִשְׁתּ֗וֹ

and=he/it_hid_himself/itself the=humankind and=his/its=woman/wife

If you use the man and his wife earlier in this verse in your translation, consider whether or not a pronoun should be used here. Alternate translation: “so they hid themselves” or “so they tried to hide themselves”

Note 4 topic: writing-pronouns

מִפְּנֵי֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהִ֔ים

from=face/in_front_of YHWH ʼElohīm

Consider what is the best way to refer to Yahweh at this point in the paragraph in your language. Alternate translation: “from Yahweh God” or “from his sight”

בְּת֖וֹךְ עֵ֥ץ הַגָּֽן

in_the=middle tree/word the=garden

Since the garden is already mentioned earlier in verse 8, for some languages it may be more natural to be general here and say “there”. Do what is best in your language. Alternate translation: “in the midst of the trees in the garden.” or “behind some trees there.”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

3:8 When the cool evening breezes were blowing: The Hebrew has traditionally been interpreted as referring to the cool part of the day, most likely the evening. Others think that the language refers to a powerful manifestation of God’s presence (a theophany; see Exod 19:16-25; 1 Sam 7:10) as a storm. If this view is correct, the man and the woman were hiding from the sound of the Lord appearing in judgment (see 2 Sam 5:24; Ps 29).
• God put trees in the garden as an environment for humanity to enjoy fellowship with God. Now the man and woman used them to evade the divine presence.
