SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 6:20–35: Ninth lesson: If you commit adultery, you will be severely punished

This lesson may be summarized as follows: The son should heed his parents’ teaching, because it will keep him from the dangers of adultery (6:20–24). He should strictly avoid being tempted by another man’s wife. An affair with such a woman will have inevitable and disastrous consequences (6:25–33), resulting from the jealous fury of the husband (6:34–35).

Some other headings for this section are:

Warning Against Adultery (NIV)

Avoid adultery

More Advice About Avoiding Adultery (GW)

The terrible consequences of committing adultery

Paragraph 6:20–35

In these notes, this section forms a single paragraph (as in the NRSV). If a long paragraph like this is not natural in your language, you may want to make paragraph breaks as in the section summary above. Some other ways to divide the paragraphs are:

Divide the paragraphs in a way that fits the natural patterns of your language.

6:34

This verse does not contain parallel parts that are similar in meaning. However, both lines function together to explain the husband’s feeling toward the adultery.

6:34a

For jealousy enrages a husband,

For: This word introduces the reason for the adulterer’s fate described in 6:33. The adulterer suffers this fate because of the husband’s jealousy and his resulting lack of mercy.

jealousy enrages a husband: This clause implies that when a husband finds out that someone has been having an affair with his wife, his jealousy will cause him to be extremely angry. Other ways to translate this clause are:

Jealousy makes a husband very angry (NCV)

the woman’s jealous husband will be furious (NLT)

6:34b

and he will show no mercy in the day of vengeance.

and he will show no mercy in the day of vengeance: In Hebrew, the phrase show no mercy is literally “not relent/spare.” It indicates that the husband will not hold back from punishing the adulterer. Another way to translate this clause is:

he shows no restraint when he takes revenge (NRSV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

כִּֽי

that/for/because/then/when

For here indicates that what follows is the reason why what Solomon stated in the previous verse is true. Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that what follows is a reason for what came before. Alternate translation: “This is due to the fact that”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

קִנְאָ֥ה & נָקָֽם

jealousy & revenge

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of jealousy and vengeance, you could express the same ideas in other ways. Alternate translation: “being jealous … being avenged”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

חֲמַת־גָּ֑בֶר

fury_of husband

Here, heat refers to extreme anger, which causes the angry person’s body to become hot. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “is the rage of a man”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

גָּ֑בֶר וְלֹֽא־יַ֝חְמ֗וֹל

husband and=not show_~_mercy

Here, man and he refer to the husband who has just found out that his wife has committed adultery. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “a husband of an adulterous woman, and that husband will not spare”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / litotes

וְלֹֽא־יַ֝חְמ֗וֹל

and=not show_~_mercy

Solomon is using a figure of speech here that expresses a strongly positive meaning by using a negative word, not, together with an expression that is the opposite of the intended meaning. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the positive meaning. Alternate translation: “and he will be merciless”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

וְלֹֽא־יַ֝חְמ֗וֹל

and=not show_~_mercy

Solomon is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a clause would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from the context if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “and he will not spare the man who slept with his wife”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

בְּי֣וֹם נָקָֽם

in/on=day revenge

Here Solomon is using the possessive form to describe the day when vengeance occurs. If your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: “when vengeance occurs”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

6:20-35 This passage emphasizes the life-threatening risk of sleeping with another man’s wife (see also 1:8, 23; 2:16-22; 5:1-23; 7:1-27).
