SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 6:20–35: Ninth lesson: If you commit adultery, you will be severely punished

This lesson may be summarized as follows: The son should heed his parents’ teaching, because it will keep him from the dangers of adultery (6:20–24). He should strictly avoid being tempted by another man’s wife. An affair with such a woman will have inevitable and disastrous consequences (6:25–33), resulting from the jealous fury of the husband (6:34–35).

Some other headings for this section are:

Warning Against Adultery (NIV)

Avoid adultery

More Advice About Avoiding Adultery (GW)

The terrible consequences of committing adultery

Paragraph 6:20–35

In these notes, this section forms a single paragraph (as in the NRSV). If a long paragraph like this is not natural in your language, you may want to make paragraph breaks as in the section summary above. Some other ways to divide the paragraphs are:

Divide the paragraphs in a way that fits the natural patterns of your language.

6:35

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

35a He will not be appeased by any ransom;

35b or persuaded by lavish gifts.

If a person has had an affair with the wife of another man, he may offer to pay compensation to that other man, but no matter how much the person offers, the husband will refuse it. It is implied that the husband will make sure that the offending man is severely punished.

6:35a–b

(combined/reordered)

ransom…lavish gifts: Here the word ransom is a synonym for bribery. It refers to money that the adulterer offers to the husband, hoping to calm his anger, obtain his forgiveness, or persuade him to keep quiet about the crime. English versions make explicit various purposes for the money. For example:

Compensation will not buy his forgiveness (REB)

no amount of gifts will satisfy his anger (GNT)

No amount of money will change his mind. (GW)

General Comment on 6:35a–b

In some languages, it may be more natural to combine and/or reorder the parallel parts. For example:

There is no compensation or bribe that will satisfy him (NLT96)

He won’t let you pay him off, no matter what you offer (CEV)

6:35a

He will not be appeased by any ransom,

6:35b

or persuaded by lavish gifts.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

לֹא־יִ֭שָּׂא & וְלֹֽא־יֹ֝אבֶ֗ה

not accept & and=not willing

In this verse, the pronoun he refers to the man who has just found out that his wife has committed adultery. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “The husband of an adulterous wife will not lift up … and that husband will not be willing”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

לֹא־יִ֭שָּׂא פְּנֵ֣י

not accept face/surface_of

Here, the phrase lift up the face of is an idiom that means “regard favorably.” If it would be helpful, you could use an idiom with that meaning in your language or express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “He will not be impressed by” or “He will not regard favorably”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

כֹּ֑פֶר & שֹֽׁחַד

compensation & bribe

Here, the words ransom and bribe refer to money that a man would give to the husband of the woman he has committed adultery with in order to avoid harm or stop the man from being angry. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “money offered to appease him … that money”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

וְלֹֽא־יֹ֝אבֶ֗ה

and=not willing

Solomon is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a clause would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from the context if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “and he will not be willing to be appeased” or “and he will not stop being angry”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

6:20-35 This passage emphasizes the life-threatening risk of sleeping with another man’s wife (see also 1:8, 23; 2:16-22; 5:1-23; 7:1-27).
