25:17 “Atonement cover”: the word used here means to “cover over,” in the sense of dealing with sins. The traditional translation of “mercy seat” originated with Martin Luther. From a physical viewpoint it was the “lid” of the Ark.

25.17 Propitiatorium. ID. Propitiatorium tabula was aurea hisdem mensuræ cuyus arca; so dicta because there God of_Moses apparens, and when/with eo loquens, propitiabatur to_the_people, and misericordiam significat, whence bene over the_box was, because misericordia his over everything opera his.
25:17 The word translated atonement means “to cover over.” The cover of the covenant box was the place of “covering over” sin (see Lev 16:14-16).
