UTNuW Translation Notes:

General Information:

Yahweh speaks about his desire for wicked people.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) Do I greatly rejoice over the death of the wicked … and not in his turning away from his way so that he may live?

(Some words not found in UHB: the,to_take_pleasure have_~_pleasure to_die wicked declares my=master GOD am=not in/on/at/with,turn,he from,ways,his and,live )

Yahweh asks this rhetorical question in order to emphasize the opposite. Alternate translation: “I do not greatly rejoice over the death of the wicked … but I do greatly rejoice if he turns away from his way so that he may live.”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

(Occurrence 0) this is the Lord Yahweh’s declaration

(Some words not found in UHB: the,to_take_pleasure have_~_pleasure to_die wicked declares my=master GOD am=not in/on/at/with,turn,he from,ways,his and,live )

Yahweh speaks of himself by name to express the certainty of what he is declaring. See how you translated this in Ezekiel 5:11. Alternate translation: “this is what the Lord Yahweh has declared” or “this is what I, the Lord Yahweh, have declared”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) not in his turning away from his way

(Some words not found in UHB: the,to_take_pleasure have_~_pleasure to_die wicked declares my=master GOD am=not in/on/at/with,turn,he from,ways,his and,live )

Yahweh speaks of a person’s lifestyle or behavior as if it were a way on which the person walks. The idiom “to turn away” from something means to stop doing that thing. Alternate translation: “not in his ceasing to live the way that he lives” (See also: figs-idiom)
