OET (OET-LV) And_not it_will_be_called again DOM name_your Abram and_it_was name_your ʼAⱱrāhām if/because a_father of_a_multitude of_nations make_you.
OET (OET-RV) so you’ll no longer be called ‘Abram’, but now your name will be ‘Abraham’ (which means ‘father of many nations’) because I’m making you the father of many nations.
וְלֹא־יִקָּרֵ֥א ע֛וֹד אֶת־שִׁמְךָ֖ אַבְרָ֑ם
and=not he/it_will_be_called again/more DOM name,your Avram
Alternate translation: “So your name will not be Abram anymore,” or “Your name will no longer be Abram,”
וְהָיָ֤ה שִׁמְךָ֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם
and=it_was name,your ʼAⱱrāhām
Consider whether or not it is better in your language to begin a new sentence here. Alternate translation: “Instead, from now on it will be Abraham,” or “Rather, I am changing it now to Abraham,”
כִּ֛י & נְתַתִּֽיךָ
that/for/because/then/when & make,you
The form of the Hebrew verb in this clause is completed aspect (have made) and shows certainty that God will do this. Consider what is the best way to communicate that in your language. Alternate translation: “because I will make you”
אַב הֲמ֥וֹן גּוֹיִ֖ם
father multitude nations
See how you translated this phrase in verse 4. Alternate translation: “the ancestor of many ethnic groups.”
17:1-27 God now gave the family signs that the promises would be fulfilled. He changed Abram’s name to Abraham (17:1-8), instituted the rite of circumcision as the sign of the covenant (17:9-14, 23-27), and changed Sarai’s name to Sarah (17:15-22).
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.
