OET (OET-LV)Do_not rejoice Oh_Fəleshet all_of_you if/because_that the_rod it_has_been_broken struck_of_you if/because from_root_of a_snake a_viper it_will_go_forth and_fruit_of_its will_be_a_serpent flying.

OET (OET-RV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) the rod that struck you is broken

(Some words not found in UHB: not rejoice Fəlishtiy all_of,you that/for/because/then/when broken rod struck_of,you that/for/because/then/when from,root_of snake come_forth viper and,fruit_of,its serpent flying )

The rod that struck Philistia represents a king who sent his army to attack them. Being broken represents either being dead or being defeated. Alternate translation: “the king that sent his army against you is dead” or “the army that attacked you is defeated”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) For out of the serpent’s root will grow out an adder … his offspring will be a fiery flying serpent

(Some words not found in UHB: not rejoice Fəlishtiy all_of,you that/for/because/then/when broken rod struck_of,you that/for/because/then/when from,root_of snake come_forth viper and,fruit_of,its serpent flying )

These two phrases are both the image of a serpent’s offspring being even more harmful than the serpent. They represent a king’s successor being more powerful and cruel than the first king. (See also: figs-metaphor)

(Occurrence 0) an adder

(Some words not found in UHB: not rejoice Fəlishtiy all_of,you that/for/because/then/when broken rod struck_of,you that/for/because/then/when from,root_of snake come_forth viper and,fruit_of,its serpent flying )

a kind of poisonous snake

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) a fiery flying serpent

(Some words not found in UHB: not rejoice Fəlishtiy all_of,you that/for/because/then/when broken rod struck_of,you that/for/because/then/when from,root_of snake come_forth viper and,fruit_of,its serpent flying )

Here the word “fiery” probably refers to the serpent’s poisonous bite, and the word “flying” refers to its quick movements. Alternate translation: “a quickly moving poisonous snake”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:29 The king who attacked Philistia was probably Ahaz (14:28).
• a more poisonous snake: This probably refers to one of the later Assyrian kings, either Sennacherib (701 BC), Esarhaddon (680 BC), or Ashurbanipal (668 BC).
