Here Yahweh is speaking to the people of how he has tested and purified them as if he had refined you, but not with silver, the way a metalworker refines precious metal. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [I have refined you, but not as one refines silver]

(Some words not found in UHB: see/lo/see! I,have_refined_you and=not (in),silver I,have_chosen_you in,a_furnace_of affliction )

Some ancient manuscripts read “I have chosen you.” The ULT follows that reading. Other ancient manuscripts read “I have tested you.” If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of the ULT.

Here Yahweh is speaking of the people’s time of suffering as if it were a furnace of affliction in which metal is refined. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [in the midst of great suffering]
