Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

WMBB (Same as above)
MSG (1-4)When David’s time to die approached, he charged his son Solomon, saying, “I’m about to go the way of all the earth, but you—be strong; show what you’re made of! Do what God tells you. Walk in the paths he shows you: Follow the life-map absolutely, keep an eye out for the signposts, his course for life set out in the revelation to Moses; then you’ll get on well in whatever you do and wherever you go. Then God will confirm what he promised me when he said, ‘If your sons watch their step, staying true to me heart and soul, you’ll always have a successor on Israel’s throne.’

אָנֹכִ֣י הֹלֵ֔ךְ בְּדֶ֖רֶךְ כָּל־הָאָ֑רֶץ
I go (Some words not found in UHB: I go in,the_way_of all/each/any/every the=earth/land and,you_will_be_strong and,you_will_become (into)_a,man )
David is referring to death in a polite way by using the phrase going in the way of all of the earth. Depending on what is helpful in your language, you could use a polite way of referring to death in your language, or you could state this plainly. Alternate translation: [I am about to pass away] or [My time to die has come]
Note 2 topic: translate-tense
אָנֹכִ֣י הֹלֵ֔ךְ
I go
David is using the present tense I am going to describe something that is going to happen in the future. He is doing that in order to show that the event will happen soon. If it would be clearer in your language, you could use the future tense. Alternate translation: [I am about to go]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
הָאָ֑רֶץ
the=earth/land
Here, the earth represents “people on earth.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [the people on earth]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
וְחָזַקְתָּ֖ וְהָיִ֥יתָֽ לְאִֽישׁ
(Some words not found in UHB: I go in,the_way_of all/each/any/every the=earth/land and,you_will_be_strong and,you_will_become (into)_a,man )
David is using the term man to represent a person who is courageous. He means that an experienced, full-grown man would be courageous in situations where younger, inexperienced boys and youths would not. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [So you shall be strong, and you shall be courageous]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism
וְחָזַקְתָּ֖ וְהָיִ֥יתָֽ לְאִֽישׁ
(Some words not found in UHB: I go in,the_way_of all/each/any/every the=earth/land and,you_will_be_strong and,you_will_become (into)_a,man )
The phrases you shall be strong and you shall be a man mean basically the same thing. The second emphasizes the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could combine them and express the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [So you must be very determined]
