Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [Then, because it burned to him, the earth shook and trembled. The foundations of the heavens quaked and shook themselves]

The terms that the ULT translates as shook and shook themselves represent two different verbs in the original. Hebrew had more synonyms for this idea, which David also expresses with the verbs translated as trembled and quaked, than some other languages may have. It may be necessary for you to use the same words rather than different ones. However, if you do have a variety of terms for this, it would be appropriate to use different words for shook and shook themselves.

ותגעש וַתִּרְעַשׁ֙ הָאָ֔רֶץ

The terms shook and trembled mean similar things. David is using the two terms together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: [Then the earth shook violently]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / personification
ותגעש וַתִּרְעַשׁ֙ הָאָ֔רֶץ

David is speaking as if the earth were actually a person who could shake and tremble with fear. This expresses how powerfully God responded to David’s prayer. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [Then it was as though a violent earthquake occurred]

David assumes that people listening to this song will recognize, according to the understanding of this culture, that the phrase the foundations of the heavens refers to solid places on which the sky rested. You could say that explicitly if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [The bases on which the sky rests]

(Some words not found in UHB: and, and,it_quaked the=earth/land foundations_of the=heavens trembled and,they_shook_back_and_forth that/for/because/then/when it_glowed/burnt to=him/it )
The terms quaked and shook themselves mean similar things. David is using the two terms together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: [quaked mightily]
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
