OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_said YHWH to Qayin/(Cain) where [is]_Heⱱel your(ms)_brother/kindred and_he/it_said not I_know the_guard/protector/keeper my_brother/kindred [am]_I.

OET (OET-RV)Later Yahweh asked Kayin, “Where’s your brother Abel?”
¶ “I don’t know,” he replied, “It’s not my job to look after my brother.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-quotations

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל קַ֔יִן

and=he/it_said YHWH to/towards Qayin/(Cain)

Alternate translation: “Then Yahweh asked Cain,”

אֵ֖י הֶ֣בֶל אָחִ֑יךָ

where? Heⱱel/(Abel) your(ms)=brother/kindred

See how you translated “Abel … brother” in verse 8.

Note 2 topic: writing-quotations

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙

and=he/it_said

Cain is answering Yahweh rudely. Consider what is the best way to translate this quote margin in your language, including whether or not to use a conjunction here. Alternate translation: “Then He said to him,” or “He answered him,” or “He retorted,”

לֹ֣א יָדַ֔עְתִּי

not I_know

Alternate translation: “How should I know that?”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

הֲשֹׁמֵ֥ר אָחִ֖י אָנֹֽכִי

the=guard/protector/keeper my=brother/kindred I

Cain uses this rhetorical question to support the lie that he just told. His response to God is rude and disrespectful. Consider whether or not a rhetorical question communicates that here in your language. Alternate translation: “Am I in charge of my brother?” or “Is it my responsibility to take care of my brother?”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

4:9 Where is your brother? The questions God asked Cain (4:6, 9, 10) recall those that God asked Cain’s parents (3:9-13). In both cases, humans put up evasive answers (cp. 3:12-13). Cain’s answer is shockingly defiant—another clue that the problem with his token offering was the attitude that lay behind it.
