uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

יְתָאֲרֵ֣הוּ

he,outlines_it

The pronoun it refers to the piece of wood that the craftsman is shaping into an idol. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [he marks the piece of wood]

Note 2 topic: translate-unknown

בַשֶּׂ֔רֶד

with,marker

Here, ochre is a red iron oxide pigment. In ancient Near Eastern woodworking, this was used in two ways: (1) Coating a cord in the pigment and “snapping” it against the wood to create a perfectly straight reference line, or (2) using a piece of the mineral like a crayon to trace the “beauty of mankind” (the human form) before carving. Red was chosen because it remained visible even when covered in sawdust. If your readers would not be familiar with what a WORD is, you could use the name of a similar thing that your readers would recognize, or you could use a more general term. Alternate translation: [with a red marker]

Note 3 topic: translate-unknown

יַעֲשֵׂ֨הוּ֙ בַּמַּקְצֻע֔וֹת וּבַמְּחוּגָ֖ה יְתָאֳרֵ֑הוּ

(Some words not found in UHB: shapes_of wood stretches_out line he,outlines_it with,marker he,works_it with_(the),tools and,with,compass he,outlines_it and,he,made_it like_[the],form_of (a)_man like_[the],beauty_of humankind to,dwell house )

Chisels are sharp metal tools used for cutting and shaping wood, and a compass is a tool with two hinged arms used for drawing circles. If your readers would not be familiar with these tools, you could use more general terms. Alternate translation: [He carves it with sharp cutting tools and he marks it with a circle-drawing tool]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

כְּתַבְנִ֣ית אִ֔ישׁ כְּתִפְאֶ֥רֶת אָדָ֖ם

like_[the],form_of (a)_man like_[the],beauty_of humankind

The point of this comparison is that just as a man has a beautiful human form, so the idol is shaped to look like a person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. Alternate translation: [like the form of a man, shaped to look like a beautiful person]
