TSNTyndale Study Notes:

29:20 erase their names: To forget the name of a people resulted in eventually forgetting their very existence. The most unspeakable tragedy would be for God to treat the people of Israel as though they had never existed (see 7:24; Exod 32:32-33; 2 Kgs 14:27).

(Some words not found in UHB: and,single_~_out,him YHWH for,calamity from=all tribes Yisrael according_to,all curses the,covenant the,written in/on/at/with,book the,law the,this )

Just as a fire can grow in intensity, so can God’s anger and Jealousy grow in intensity. Alternate translation: “Yahweh’s jealous anger will grow like a fire”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys

(Occurrence 0) the anger of Yahweh and his jealousy

(Some words not found in UHB: and,single_~_out,him YHWH for,calamity from=all tribes Yisrael according_to,all curses the,covenant the,written in/on/at/with,book the,law the,this )

Here the word “jealousy” describes “the anger of Yahweh.” Alternate translation: Yahweh’s jealous anger”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Some words not found in UHB: and,single_~_out,him YHWH for,calamity from=all tribes Yisrael according_to,all curses the,covenant the,written in/on/at/with,book the,law the,this )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “that I have written”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) the curses that are written in this book will come on him

(Some words not found in UHB: and,single_~_out,him YHWH for,calamity from=all tribes Yisrael according_to,all curses the,covenant the,written in/on/at/with,book the,law the,this )

Moses describes the curses as a person who would attack them by surprise. See how you translated these words in Deuteronomy 28:15. Alternate translation: “Yahweh will curse him with the curses written in this book in ways that will completely surprise him” (See also: figs-personification)

(Occurrence 0) Yahweh will blot out his name from under heaven

(Some words not found in UHB: and,single_~_out,him YHWH for,calamity from=all tribes Yisrael according_to,all curses the,covenant the,written in/on/at/with,book the,law the,this )

This means God will completely destroy the person and his family. In the future people will not remember him. A similar phrase appears in Deuteronomy 7:24.
