The wealthy leader

Luke 18:18–30

Mark 10:17–31

Mat 19:16–30

18:18 The wealthy leader

(Mark 10:17-31, Mat. 19:16-30)

18One time a local leader asked Yeshua, “Good teacher, what do I need to do to gain eternal life?”

19Why do you call me good?Yeshua responded. “No one is good other than God himself. 20[ref]You know God’s commandments: Don’t commit adultery, don’t murder, don’t steal, don’t lie in court, and honour your parents.

21“I’ve obeyed all of those since I was young,” the leader replied.

22Then you’re lacking only one more thing,Yeshua added. “Sell everything you own and distribute the money to the poor, then you’ll have treasure in the heavens. Then come and follow me. 23But when he heard this, the man was very upset because he was extremely wealthy.

24As Yeshua looked at him, he said, “It’s so difficult for those who’re wealthy to enter into God’s kingdom 25it’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a wealthy person to enter God’s kingdom.

26Those around who heard asked, “Then who’s able to be saved?”

27“What’s humanly impossible,” he replied, “is quite possible with God.”

28Peter spoke up, “Hey, we left everything and followed you!”

29I can assure you all,” Yeshua responded, “that no one who left their home or spouse or siblings, or parents or children on account of God’s kingdom 30will not be repaid many times over in this age as well as gaining eternal life in the coming age.

10:17 Leaving behind everything to be saved

(Mat. 19:16-30, Luke 18:18-30)

17One time when Yeshua was starting out on a trip, a man caught up to him and kneeling down in front of him asked, “Good teacher, what do I have to do to inherit eternal life?”

18He answered, “Why do you call me good? No person is good—only God is. 19[ref]You know the commandments: don’t murder, don’t commit adultery, don’t steal, don’t lie about others, don’t defraud others, and honour your parents.

20The man responded, “I’ve kept all of those since I was young.”

21Yeshua looked up at him with genuine love and said, “There’s one thing still to be done: sell everything you have and give the money to the poor—then you’ll have wealth in heaven. After that, come and follow me. 22But the man grew very sad when he heard this, because he owned many properties.

23Yeshua looked around at his followers, “It’s so difficult for wealthy people to enter God’s kingdom.

24(His followers were a bit stunned at his teaching.) Yeshua continued, “Yes, it’s certainly difficult to enter into God’s kingdom. 25It’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter God’s kingdom.

26Now they were totally stunned, asking, “How can anyone possibly be saved then?”

27Yeshua looked intently at them, “Yes, humanly it’s quite impossible. But with God it’s different—God can do anything!

28Peter said, “We left everything and came and followed you.”

29He answered, “Yes I can assure you all that anyone who left their home or farm, and left their siblings or parents or children because of me and my teaching, 30they’ll be rewarded one hundred times over with homes and farms and siblings and parents and children along with persecution, but gaining eternal life in the next era. 31[ref]But many at the top now will be at the bottom then, and many at the bottom now will be blessed then.

19:16 Answering the rich man

(Mark 10:17-31, Luke 18:18-30)

16And look, a man approached Yeshua and asked him, “Teacher, what good thing do I need to do in order to have eternal life?”

17Why are you asking me about what’s good?” Yeshua responded. “Only one is good. But if you’re wanting to enter into life, you should obey the commandments.

18[ref]Which ones?” he asked.

Don’t murder,” Yeshua answered, “don’t mess with another person’s spouse, don’t steal, don’t lie in court, 19[ref]honour your parents, and love your neighbour like yourself.

20“I’ve kept all of those,” the young man said, “so what else do I need to do?”

21If you want to be perfect,” answered Yeshua, “go and sell what you own and give to the poor, and then you’ll have treasure in the heavens. Then come and follow me.

22But when the young man heard that, he went away despondent because he owned many properties.

23So Yeshua said to his apprentices, “I can assure you that it’s more difficult for a wealthy person to enter the kingdom of the heavens. 24In fact, it’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a wealthy person to enter God’s kingdom.

25When his apprentices heard that, they were very surprised and asked, “Well, who can be saved then?”

26Yeshua looked them in the eyes and answered, “It’s impossible for humans, but with God, everything is possible.

27“Hey,” Peter reacted, “we left everything to follow you, so what will happen to us?”

28[ref]I can assure you all,Yeshua responded. “that after the world is remade and I sit down on his splendid throne, all of you who followed me will also sit on twelve thrones ruling over the twelve tribes of Israel. 29And everyone who left their houses, or brothers or sisters, or father or mother, or wife or children, or farms on account of my name and commission, will be repaid a hundred times over and will inherit eternal life.

19:29 The last will be first

30[ref]But many who are first will end up last, and the last will be first
