28:1 The women encounter the messenger and then meet Yeshua

(Mark 16:1-10, Luke 24:1-12, Yhn 20:1-10)

28After the days of rest during the first light of Sunday morning, Maria from Magdala and the other Maria went out to visit the tomb. 2Then, wow, there was a massive earthquake because one of the master’s messengers had come down from heaven and approached the tomb. He had rolled away the stone and was now sitting on it. 3He looked as if you were watching lightning and his clothes were extremely white. 4The guards at the tomb shook with fear when they saw him and then they fainted.

5Then the messenger spoke to the women, “Don’t be scared because I know that both of you are looking for Yeshua who was executed on a stake. 6He isn’t here, because he came back to life just like he said he would. Go inside and see the place where his body was lying 7and then leave straight away and go and tell his followers that he has come alive again and will go ahead of you all to Galilee. You’ll see him when you get there. Listen, I’ve told you now.”

8So they went off quickly with a mixture of fear and incredible happiness, and ran back to tell Yeshua’s followers.

9Then, wow, Yeshua met them on the path and greeted them. The two women went close and knelt down and took hold of his feet and lowered their heads. 10Then Yeshua spoke again, “Don’t be scared. Go now and tell my brothers so they’ll go up to Galilee and then they’ll see me there.

16:1 The massive shock at the burial chamber

(Yhn 20:1-10, Mat. 28:1-8, Luke 24:1-12)

16After the Rest Day was over, Maria from Magdala and Maria the mother of Yacob and Salome, went and bought some traditional burial spices that evening to take to the burial chamber and place with the body. 2Then very early on Sunday morning they went to the chamber, arriving just as the sun was rising. 3But they realised that they didn’t have anyone with them to roll the rock away that was covering the entrance. 4However, when they looked they saw that the very large rock had already been rolled away. 5So they went on into the burial chamber and were totally stunned to find a young man dressed in white, sitting in there on the side.

6He assured them, “Don’t be surprised. I know you’re looking for Yeshua from Nazareth, the one who was executed on a pole. But see there where his body was—he’s not there because he came back to life. 7[ref]So you three should go and tell his trainees, and Peter in particular, that he’s going to go up ahead of them to Galilee and you’ll all see him up there, just as he already told you.”

8So they left the chamber and took off running, still stunned and shaking and too scared to stop and to talk to anyone. It’s not certain whether or not the following longer ending of this document was actually penned by Mark, or whether it was appended slightly later. Expert scholars are divided on this, and hence it’s included here for your consideration:

16:8The others don’t believe that Maria saw Yeshua

(Yhn 20:11-18, Mat. 28:9-10)

9After coming back to life early on Sunday morning, Yeshua appeared first to Maria from Magdala. (She was the one that he had once commanded seven demons to leave.) 10After leaving him, she went and told his followers who were mourning and weeping at his loss.

24but as soon as it dawned on Sunday morning, they went back to the tomb taking the prepared spices. 2There they discovered that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance 3and when they went in, the body of the master Yeshua wasn’t there. 4While they were still there puzzling about what might have happened, two men in dazzling clothes approached them. 5The women were scared, and knelt down and bowed with their faces close to the ground, but the men asked them, “Why are you looking for the living in the place of the dead? 6[ref]He’s not here—he’s been brought back to life. Remember how he spoke to you all when you were still in Galilee 7and he said, ‘It’s necessary that humanity’s child is handed over to sinful people, and to be executed on a stake, and then to come back to life on the third day.’ 8Then indeed they remembered his words.

9Then they left the tomb and went back into the city and reported all this to the eleven apprentices and all the others. 10(The women who told this to the missionaries were Maria from Magdala, Yoanna, Maria the mother of Yacob, and the other women who were with them.) 11However those who heard it, thought it was all just nonsense and didn’t believe them. 12But Peter stood up and ran off to the tomb, and when he stooped down to look in, he could only see the linen cloths, so he wandered off by himself, wondering what could have happened.

20:1 The body is missing from the chamber

(Mat. 28:1-8, Mark 16:1-8, Luke 24:1-12)

20The following Sunday, Maria from Magdala went out to the tomb very early when it was still dark, and she saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2So she ran quickly and went to Simon Peter and the other intern that Yeshua loved, and told them, “They’ve taken the master’s body out of the tomb and we don’t know where they’ve put it.”

3So Peter and the other intern went out to the tomb. 4They were running together, but the other intern was a bit faster than Peter and so he got to the tomb first. 5Without going in, he stooped down at the entrance and looked in and saw the linen strips lying there. 6But Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb and also saw the linen strips lying there. 7But the piece of cloth that had been on the head wasn’t lying there with the linen strips, but had been folded and placed separately. 8So now the other intern who had arrived first also went inside and he saw it all and believed that Yeshua had risen. 9(At that time they weren’t yet aware of the scripture about him coming back to life.) 10So they went back again to their homes.
