The Messianic Banquet
Through his teaching and miracles, Jesus announced that the messianic banquet was about to be served. All may come and feast at the table of salvation in God’s Kingdom.
Jesus described his ministry as a wedding feast, with himself as the groom (Luke 5:33-35) and the Kingdom of God as a great banquet. All were invited, but some refused to come (Luke 14:15-24; see also Matt 8:11-12). Jesus often ate with diverse people, from despised tax collectors to pious Pharisees (5:29-32; 7:36-50; 11:37-41; 14:1-6). Jesus also used imagery of feasting and banquets in his teaching and parables (5:33-35; 12:35-38; 14:7-14, 15-24; 17:7-10; 22:28-30). And he fed vast multitudes with a few loaves and fishes (9:10-17).
The Old Testament background to this feasting imagery is Isa 25:6, where God’s final salvation is described as a great feast for all people: “The Lord of Heaven’s Armies will spread a wonderful feast for all the people of the world. It will be a delicious banquet, with clear, well-aged wine and choice meat” (see also Isa 65:13-14).
Jesus’ public ministry marked the invitation to the banquet and its inauguration. Through his death and resurrection, he achieved salvation. All people can now come to God’s banquet table and receive the spiritual blessings of the Kingdom. At the same time, this banquet awaits its final consummation in the future Kingdom, when Jesus’ disciples will “eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom” and “sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel” (Luke 22:30; see also Rev 19:7-9).

In this section Jesus was still in the house of the Pharisee. He noticed that the other guests who came into the house were choosing positions of honor at the meal. He instructed them by means of a parable about wedding guests that they should be humble and not seek their own honor (14:7–11). He then instructed the Pharisee who was their host to hold feasts for people who were poor. Poor people could not invite him to a feast in return, so God would reward him (14:12–14).

In this paragraph Jesus taught that people should not invite to their feasts only people who can repay them by inviting them to a meal. They should also invite poor people who cannot repay them.

you will be blessed: The Greek word that the BSB translates as blessed here refers to being in a good situation. This situation is a result of God showing favor or kindness to that person. Some other ways to translate this word are:
you will be truly fortunate/happy
God will bless/favor you

Since they cannot repay you,
for those people cannot pay you(sing) back,
because the people you invited cannot give you any repayment/reward,
Since: In Greek, this verse part begins with a conjunction that some versions, such as the RSV and GNT, translate as “because.” This conjunction introduces the reason why the host who invites the poor will be blessed. This reason is given in 14:14b–c. 14:14b gives the negative part of the reason: Poor people cannot repay you here in this life. 14:14c gives the positive part of the reason: God will repay you in the future. See the General Comment at the end of 14:14c for a way to reorder these verse parts.
The BSB uses the conjunction Since here because the negative clause in 14:14b is not a blessing in itself. This helps the reader to understand that the blessing will come from God in the future. Consider how to connect these clauses so that your readers correctly understand the reason for the blessing.
they cannot repay you: The expression they cannot repay you means that the poor and disabled are not able to do the same kind of thing for the host as he has done for them. They are too poor or too weak to have a feast to which they could invite others.
you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

you will be repaid: The clause you will be repaid is a passive clause. The implied subject is God. Other ways to translate this clause are:
you will be rewarded
God will bless you and reward you (CEV)
at the resurrection of the righteous: The phrase the resurrection of the righteous refers to the time in the future when God will cause all the righteous people who have died to live again. Other ways to translate this phrase are:
when the good people rise from the dead (NCV)
when upright people come to life again
on the day when God causes righteous people to live again
the righteous: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as the righteous probably refers to people whom God accepts as righteous. He considers them to be just and good according to his standards. Some ways to translate this are:
all those who have a right relationship with God
those who have God’s approval (GW)
those whom he/God considers to be good/righteous
In some languages people use an idiom to express this meaning. For example:
those who follow a straight path
upright people
In some languages it may be more natural to place 14:14c before 14:14b. This may help readers to understand the reason why those who invite the poor and crippled in 14:14a are blessed. For example:
14cThen at the resurrection of the righteous, God will reward you 14bfor inviting those who could not repay you. (NLT)

This expression does not mean that these people would not have a social obligation to return hospitality, the way others would. Rather, Jesus is leaving out some of the words that a sentence would need in many languages in order to be complete. Alternate translation: [they do not have the means to repay you] or [they cannot invite you to a banquet in return]
