Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent
וַיְהִ֞י
and=he/it_was
The phrase And it happened introduces a new event in the story. This is a common way in biblical Hebrew to signal the beginning of a new section. If your language has a natural way to mark the start of a new event, you could use it here. Alternate translation: [Then] or [After this]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / events
בַּשָּׁנָ֧ה הַשֵּׁנִ֛ית בַּחֹ֥דֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִ֖י בְּעֶשְׂרִ֣ים בַּחֹ֑דֶשׁ
in,year the=second(fs) in,month the=second on_[day],twenty in,month
This event took place after the events narrated in Numbers 1–6, which took place after the events in Numbers 7–9. If it is helpful in your language, you might want to make it clear that the account that starts in this verse happened after the events in chapters 1–6. Alternate translation: [after the census, in the second year, in the second month, on 20 in the month]
Note 3 topic: translate-ordinal
בַּשָּׁנָ֧ה הַשֵּׁנִ֛ית בַּחֹ֥דֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִ֖י
in,year the=second(fs) in,month the=second
If your language would not represent numbers in forms such as in the second year and in the second month, you could represent these numbers in forms that your language would use. Alternate translation: [in year two, in month two]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
בַּשָּׁנָ֧ה הַשֵּׁנִ֛ית
in,year the=second(fs)
The implication is that this was two years after the Israelites had left Egypt. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [in the second year after the Israelites left Egypt]
Note 5 topic: translate-hebrewmonths
בַּחֹ֥דֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִ֖י
in,month the=second
The second month of the Hebrew calendar includes April and May on Western calendars. You could convert the Hebrew day and month into an approximate date on the calendar that your culture uses. However, the Jews used a lunar calendar, so if you use a solar calendar, the date will be different every year, and the translation will not be entirely accurate. So you may just want to give the number of the day and the name of the month on the Hebrew calendar and say in a footnote approximately what time of year that is on your calendar.
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
בְּעֶשְׂרִ֣ים
on_[day],twenty
The author is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [on day 20]
Note 7 topic: translate-ordinal
בְּעֶשְׂרִ֣ים
on_[day],twenty
If your language would not represent a number in a form such as on 20, you could represent this number in a form that your language would use. Alternate translation: [on the twentieth]
Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
נַעֲלָה֙ הֶֽעָנָ֔ן
lifted the,cloud
The expression was taken up is a passive verbal form. If your language would not use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who does the action, the context indicates that it is Yahweh. Alternate translation: [Yahweh took the cloud up]
Note 9 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
מִשְׁכַּ֥ן הָעֵדֻֽת
tabernacle_of of,the_testimony
The implication is that the tent housed the stone tablets on which Yahweh had written the Ten Commandments, which were called “the Testimony.” The ark containing these tablets was kept in the Most Holy Place in this tent. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. See how you translated this phrase in [1:50](../01/50.md). Alternate translation: [the tent holding the ark containing the Ten Commandments]
