1.13 Omnem pretiosam substantiam reperiemus. Homines, scilicet, quos Christo adhærentes videbant, quos putabant ab ejus amore et comitatu secernere si eum occiderent, et spoliis talium domos suas replere, id est, eorum animabus sua conventicula.

Section 1:8–19: First lesson: Avoid evil companions

This first lesson may be summarized as follows:

Introduction: Pay attention to your parents’ advice, because it will improve your character (1:8–9).
Lesson: If robbers try to persuade you to do evil (1:10–14), refuse to join them (1:15), because they will destroy their own lives (1:16–18).

Paragraph 1:10–14

In this paragraph, the quote that starts in 1:11a and ends in 1:14b gives the words that the “sinners” use to “entice” the young man. The concluding exhortation of 1:10b is parallel to the concluding exhortations of 1:15a–b.

Notice that the parallel lines are similar in meaning:

We will rob them and take all kinds of riches/wealth.

We will find all manner of precious goods: It is implied that the criminals will find all manner of precious goods (both money and possessions) from those they have murdered. That will cause them to become rich.According to Whybray (page 40), this is a proposal to raid the houses of fellow citizens for the purpose of getting nice things for their own homes. Other scholars understand that the gang engages in mugging or highway robbery of individuals. Some other ways to translate this clause are:

We’ll take their valuables (CEV)

We’ll find all kinds of riches (GNT)

1:13a–b

We^(incl) will steal their valuable possessions and put everything in our houses.
Then we will fill our houses with all the money and other things that we have taken from them.

1:13b

we will fill our houses with plunder.

and fill our own houses with what we^(incl) have stolen.
Then our houses will be filled with the valuable things that we have taken from them.

we will fill our houses: The phrase fill our houses does not mean to fill the houses until they are literally “full.” It means that the criminals will put many things in their houses.

with plunder: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as plunder refers to valuable things that are taken by force. For example:

with stolen goods (NCV)

General Comment on 1:13a–b

In this kind of parallelism, the second line often has a stronger or more specific meaning than the first line. For example, “fill our houses” has a stronger meaning than “find,” and “plunder” is more specific than “all manner of precious goods.” In some languages, it may be possible to use parallel lines like this.

In other languages, it may be more natural to combine and/or reorder the parallel parts in 1:13a–b. For example:

We will rob them and fill our houses with the valuable things we have taken.

We will take their valuable possessions and fill our houses with what we have stolen.

Express the meaning clearly and naturally in your language.
