OET (OET-LV) If a_ransom it_will_be_imposed on/upon/above_him/it and_he/it_gave the_ransom life_his in_full that it_will_be_imposed on/upon/above_him/it.
OET (OET-RV) If a ransom payment is demanded instead, the owner may buy back their life by paying the full amount demanded.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
if ransom demanded on/upon/above=him/it and=he/it_gave redemption life,his in,full which/who demanded on/upon/above=him/it
The text does not specify who will impose a ransom on the ox’s owner. Since other texts indicate that justice is retributive and performed by the dead person’s family, that is one option. Another option is that the judges will impose it. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could express one of these explicitly.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
אִם־כֹּ֖פֶר יוּשַׁ֣ת עָלָ֑יו & יוּשַׁ֖ת עָלָֽיו
if ransom demanded on/upon/above=him/it & demanded on/upon/above=him/it
If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. However, you must make a decision regarding who is imposing the ransom or use an unspecified pronoun, if that is possible in your language (this second option would not make sense in English). Alternate translation: “If the judges impose a ransom on him … they impose on him”
21:28-32 If an animal caused a person’s death and the owner was judged to be negligent, the relatives of the deceased could demand the death penalty for both the animal and its owner. However, that penalty was not mandatory, and the relatives could elect to accept compensation (21:30).
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.
