uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / hypo

that/for/because/then/when by_now stretched_out DOM hand,my and,struck DOM,you and, people,your in/on/at/with,plague and,cut_off from/more_than the=earth/land

This verse presents two things that God could have done but did not do to the Egyptians. This is to set up the reason he gives in the next verse. Be sure that it is clear in your translation that these are hypothetical past events. See the note regarding Yahweh’s stated goals in the next verse. Some languages may need to reverse the order of these verses to put Yahweh’s goals before his non-action. Use the natural form in your language for expressing a hypothetical situation.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

שָׁלַ֣חְתִּי אֶת־יָדִ֔י וָאַ֥ךְ אוֹתְךָ֛

stretched_out DOM hand,my and,struck DOM,you

Here, my hand refers to God’s power. Alternate translation: “I could have used my power to attack you”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וָאַ֥ךְ אוֹתְךָ֛ וְאֶֽת־עַמְּךָ֖ בַּדָּ֑בֶר

and,struck DOM,you and, people,your in/on/at/with,plague

Here, a plague is spoken about as if it were something that could be used to hit someone. If your readers would not understand what this image means in this context, you could use an equivalent metaphor from your culture. Alternatively, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “and caused you and your people to suffer from a plague”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:13-33 The seventh plague was a hailstorm (9:18). It rains in Egypt only a few days each year, and hail and thunderstorms are largely unknown, so this storm would have been terrifying. That may be why there is more theological reflection associated with it. The devastating effect of the plague was to destroy the flax and barley crops (9:31).
