OET (OET-LV)There the_hand of_Yahweh [is]_about_to_be in/on/at/with_livestock_your which in_the_field in/on/at/with_horses in/on/at/with_donkeys in/on/at/with_camels in/on/at/with_herds and_in/on/at/with_flocks a_pestilence heavy very.

OET (OET-RV) then listen. Yahweh is about to inflict a very serious plague on your livestock which are in the fields—on the horses, the donkeys, the camels, the cattle, and on the flock.

uW Translation Notes:

הִנֵּ֨ה

see/lo/see!

The word behold is used to draw attention to surprising information that follows. Alternate translation: “look out”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

יַד־יְהוָ֜ה הוֹיָ֗ה בְּמִקְנְךָ֙

hand YHWH bring in/on/at/with,livestock,your

Here, hand represents Yahweh’s power to afflict their animals with disease. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: “Then the power of Yahweh will afflict your livestock”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

יַד־יְהוָ֜ה

hand YHWH

This is part of the reported speech that Yahweh wants Moses to say to Pharaoh. Therefore, you could change the third person the hand of Yahweh to first person if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “My hand”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / youdual

בְּמִקְנְךָ֙

in/on/at/with,livestock,your

While the word your here is not plural, the next verse shows that it refers to all the people of Egypt who owned cattle. If your language uses different forms of “you” depending on the number of people addressed, you may want to use a plural form here.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / merism

בַּסּוּסִ֤ים בַּֽחֲמֹרִים֙ בַּגְּמַלִּ֔ים בַּבָּקָ֖ר וּבַצֹּ֑אן

in/on/at/with,horses in/on/at/with,donkeys in/on/at/with,camels in/on/at/with,herds and,in/on/at/with,flocks

This long list is meant to reinforce the universal effects of the coming plague. It is presented in this way for rhetorical effect, that is, to convince Pharaoh of how bad this plague will be so he will obey. You should translate the list in such a way that it is not limiting but is understood to imply universality.

Note 5 topic: grammar-collectivenouns

בַּבָּקָ֖ר & וּבַצֹּ֑אן

in/on/at/with,herds & (Some words not found in UHB: see/lo/see! hand YHWH bring in/on/at/with,livestock,your which/who in_the=field in/on/at/with,horses in/on/at/with,donkeys in/on/at/with,camels in/on/at/with,herds and,in/on/at/with,flocks plague severe very )

These (cattle and flock) are collective singular nouns which refer to groups of animals. If your language does not use singular nouns in that way, you can use a different expression. Alternate translation: “on your bulls and cows and on your sheep and goats”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

כָּבֵ֥ד

severe

Here the plague is spoken of as if it weighed a lot. This means it would be very bad. If your readers would not understand what this image means in this context, you could use an equivalent metaphor from your culture. Alternatively, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “severe”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:3 Your livestock refers specifically to field animals. Other animals would have boils inflicted upon them in the next plague.
• The term all (also in 9:6) is not absolute; it does not mean that every single livestock animal was killed. There were still some left to protect from the hail of the seventh plague (9:20).
