OET (OET-LV)And_in_course_of the_days and_died the_daughter of_Shūˊa the_wife of_Yəhūdāh and_he/it_sighed/regretted Yəhūdāh and_he/it_ascended to the_shearers his/its_flock_of_sheep/goats he and_Ḩīrāh his/its_neighbour the_Adullamite Timnāˊh_to.

OET (OET-RV)A long time afterwards, Yehudah’s wife (Shua’s daughter) died. After Yehudah had finished mourning, he and his friend Hirah (the Adullamite) went to Timnah to where the men were shearing his sheep.

uW Translation Notes:

וַיִּרְבּוּ֙ הַיָּמִ֔ים

and,in_course_of the=days

Alternate translation: “Many years later,” or “Years went by and then”

וַתָּ֖מָת בַּת שׁ֣וּעַ אֵֽשֶׁת יְהוּדָ֑ה

and,died daughter_of Shūˊa wife_of Yehuda

Notice that Shua was the father of Judah’s wife. Be consistent here with how you spelled his name in verse 2.

וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם יְהוּדָ֗ה

and=he/it_sighed/regretted Yehuda

See how you translated comforted in Gen 37:35. Alternate translation: “After Judah finished grieving for her, one day” or “After Judah had completed the customary time of mourning for her,”

וַיַּ֜עַל & תִּמְנָֽתָה

and=he/it_ascended & Timnah,to

Make sure your translation of this clause does not sound like Judah had already arrived at Timnah, because he does not actually reach there until verse 19. His trip from the town of Adullam (verse 1) to the town of Timnah was about 13 kilometers (8 miles).

עַל גֹּֽזֲזֵ֤י צֹאנוֹ֙

on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in shearing his/its=flock_of_sheep/goats

See how you translated “shear his sheep” in Gen 31:19 and see the note about that there. Alternate translation: “where his men were shearing his sheep for him.”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

ה֗וּא וְחִירָ֛ה רֵעֵ֥הוּ הָעֲדֻלָּמִ֖י

he/it and,Hirah his/its=neighbour the,Adullamite

For some languages it may be clearer or more natural to put this clause earlier in this verse and say, “… and he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went up to the town of Timnah where men were shearing Judah’s sheep for him.” Do what is best in your language. Also, be consistent here with how you spelled Hirah and how you translated Adullamite in verse 1. Alternate translation: “His friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

38:1-30 The story of Judah and Tamar is a carefully placed interlude; it reports what was happening in the family of Judah, who would later rise to prominence, and it shows the beginnings of assimilation with the people of the land to help explain why God sent the family to Egypt (chs 39–47). The Egyptians were strict separatists (43:32); the Israelites would retain their unique identity better in Egypt than in Canaan.
