OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_said Yəhūdāh let_her_take_[them] to/for_her/it lest we_should_become as_laughingstock there I_sent the_young_goat the_this and_you(ms) not find_her.

OET (OET-RV) “Oh well,said Yehudah. “Let her keep those things for herself so that we don’t become a laughingstock. Anyway, I did my duty by sending the goat, but you couldn’t find her.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-quotations

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוּדָה֙

and=he/it_said Yehuda

Alternate translation: “Then Judah said to him,” or “Judah replied,”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

פֶּ֖ן נִהְיֶ֣ה לָב֑וּז

lest become as,laughingstock

The pronouns we and “us” are inclusive here because Judah is including Hirah; some languages might use a dual pronoun. Use the pronouns that are best in your language in this context. Alternate translation: “so that people do not laugh at us.” or “so that we are not publicly shamed.”

הִנֵּ֤ה

see/lo/see!

Alternate translation: “After all,”

שָׁלַ֨חְתִּי֙ הַגְּדִ֣י הַזֶּ֔ה

sent the,young_goat the=this

Alternate translation: “I did try to deliver this goat to her,” or “I sent you to deliver this goat to her,”

וְאַתָּ֖ה לֹ֥א מְצָאתָֽהּ

and=you(ms) not find,her

Alternate translation: “but you could not find her.”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

38:1-30 The story of Judah and Tamar is a carefully placed interlude; it reports what was happening in the family of Judah, who would later rise to prominence, and it shows the beginnings of assimilation with the people of the land to help explain why God sent the family to Egypt (chs 39–47). The Egyptians were strict separatists (43:32); the Israelites would retain their unique identity better in Egypt than in Canaan.
