OET (OET-LV)To/for_what will_we_die before_eyes_your both we as_well_as land_our buy DOM_us and_DOM land_our in/on/at/with_food and_be we and_land_our slaves to_Farˊoh and_give seed and_live and_not we_will_die and_the_land not it_will_be_desolate.

OET (OET-RV)Why should we die right in front of you—both we and our land? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we and our land will be slaves to Far’oh. And give us seed so that we’ll live and not die, and so that the land won’t be barren.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

לָ֧מָּה נָמ֣וּת לְעֵינֶ֗יךָ גַּם אֲנַ֨חְנוּ֙ גַּ֣ם אַדְמָתֵ֔נוּ

to/for=what die before,eyes,your also/yet we also/yet land,our

For many languages, the verb die does not fit with both people and land, so a different verb must be used for each one. The end of verse 19 specifies how the land would “die.” See how you translated a similar rhetorical question in verse 15. Alternate translation: “What good would it do for us to die and our fields to become ruined” or “Please do not just watch us die or let our land become empty.”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

קְנֵֽה אֹתָ֥נוּ וְאֶת אַדְמָתֵ֖נוּ בַּלָּ֑חֶם

buy DOM,us and=DOM land,our in/on/at/with,food

Consider again how you translated the synecdoche bread in the book of Genesis. See Gen 3:19 (and note); 14:18; 21:14; 28:20; 37:25; 38:6; 41:54-55; 43:31; 47:12, 15, 17, 19. It may be necessary to translate this term in different ways, depending on the context. Alternate translation: “Instead, please take us and our fields in exchange for food.” or “Instead please give us food and we will give you our farmland and ourselves to pay for it.”

וְנִֽהְיֶ֞ה אֲנַ֤חְנוּ וְאַדְמָתֵ֨נוּ֙ עֲבָדִ֣ים לְפַרְעֹ֔ה

and,be we and,land,our slaves to,Pharaoh

Consider whether or not it is better in your language to begin a new sentence here. Alternate translation: “Then our fields will belong to King Pharaoh and we will work for him as his servants.”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְתֶן זֶ֗רַע

and,give seed/offspring

Alternate translation: “Please give us seeds to sow”

וְנִֽחְיֶה֙

and,live

Alternate translation: “so that we can survive” or “so that we will stay alive”

וְלֹ֣א נָמ֔וּת

and=not die

See how you translated so that we will live and not die in Gen 42:2. Alternate translation: “and not die from hunger,”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

וְהָאֲדָמָ֖ה לֹ֥א תֵשָֽׁם

and,the,land not become_desolate

For some languages it may be clearer and more natural to put this clause earlier in this sentence and say, “Please just give us seeds to plant so that the land will produce/grow food crops again and then we will survive and not die from hunger!” Do what is best in your language. Alternate translation: “and so that the land will grow crops again!”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

47:13-26 The Lord blessed Pharaoh because Pharaoh was blessing Abraham’s descendants (12:3). Through Joseph’s wise administration in Egypt, the Lord saved the people from starvation and prospered Pharaoh. In selling food to the Egyptians during the years of famine, Joseph accepted money, livestock, and finally land as payment, until almost all of Egypt belonged to Pharaoh. Meanwhile, God provided Israel with some of the best land in Egypt where they could live, work, and multiply.
