OET (OET-LV)And_they_said to Farˊoh to_sojourn on_the_earth we_have_come if/because there_[is]_not pasture for_the_flocks which for_servants’_your if/because [was]_heavy the_famine in_land of_Kinaˊan and_now let_them_dwell please your_servants in_land of_Goshen.

OET (OET-RV)Then they explained, “We’ve come to stay here for a while because in Canaan, there’s no pasture for our flocks because the drought is very severe. So now, please let your servants settle in the Goshen area.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-quotations

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֶל פַּרְעֹ֗ה

and=they_said to/towards Farˊoh

For some languages it is more natural here to omit this quote margin, because the same people (Joseph’s brothers) are still talking to the same person (Pharaoh). However, the words emphasize what Joseph’s five brothers say next and may indicate that there was a pause between what they said in verse 3 and verse 4. Do what is best in your language. Alternate translation: “Then they added,”

לָג֣וּר & בָּאנוּ֒

to,sojourn & come

Alternate translation: “We have come here to stay for a while” or “We came here to stay temporarily”

בָּאָרֶץ֮

on_the=earth

Alternate translation: “in this country,” or “in your land”

כִּי אֵ֣ין מִרְעֶ֗ה לַצֹּאן֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לַעֲבָדֶ֔יךָ

that/for/because/then/when not pasture for_the,flocks which/who for,servants',your

Consider whether or not it is better to begin a new sentence here in your language. Alternate translation: “because there was not enough grass for our flocks of sheep and goats” or “Our flocks, sir, did not have enough grass to eat”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

כִּֽי כָבֵ֥ד הָרָעָ֖ב בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן

that/for/because/then/when severe the,famine in=land Kenaan

For some languages it may be clearer or more natural to put this clause earlier in this sentence. For example: “The famine is so severe/terrible in the region of Canaan where we are/come from that there is not enough grass in the fields for our flocks.” Do what is best in your language. Alternate translation: “in the region of Canaan where we are from, because the famine is so severe there.”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

וְעַתָּ֛ה יֵֽשְׁבוּ נָ֥א עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ

and=now settle now your=servants

See how you translated your servants in verse 3 to show respect. Alternate translation: “So now please let us your humble servants live” or “So then, sir, please let us settle”

בְּאֶ֥רֶץ גֹּֽשֶׁן

in=land Goshen

Alternate translation: “in the region of Goshen.”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

47:1-6 Pharaoh responded as Joseph hoped by giving Jacob’s family the best part of the land; he even gave some of the brothers oversight of his own livestock (47:6).
