47:29 OSHB note: BHS has been faithful to the Leningrad Codex where there might be a question of the validity of the form and we keep the same form as BHS.

OET (OET-RV)and he was getting close to death, so he called for his son Yosef and asked him, “If, please, I have found favour in your eyes, please give me your hand and promise to deal with me in kindness and faithfulness. Please don’t bury me in Egypt.

None
uW Translation Notes:

וַיִּקְרְב֣וּ יְמֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֘ל לָמוּת֒

and,they_drew_near days_of Yisrael to,die

Consider whether or not it is better in your language to begin a new sentence here. Alternate translation: [When it was almost time for Israel to die] or [He knew that it was almost time for him to die, so]

וַיִּקְרָ֣א ׀ לִבְנ֣וֹ לְיוֹסֵ֗ף

and=he/it_called (to),son_of,his (to),Joseph

Alternate translation: [he asked for his son Joseph to come to him]

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

אִם־נָ֨א מָצָ֤אתִי חֵן֙ בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ

if now found graciousness/kindness/favour/beauty in,eyes_of,your

Alternate translation: [Please show your favor toward me and] or [Please, if you truly love me]

Note 2 topic: translate-symaction

שִֽׂים־נָ֥א יָדְךָ֖ תַּ֣חַת יְרֵכִ֑י

put now hand_of,your below/instead_of thigh_of,my

See how you translated this clause in Gen 24:2, and see the note about this custom there. Alternate translation: [put your hand under my leg to show that you will do what I ask] or [make a vow by putting your hand under my leg]

וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ עִמָּדִי֙ חֶ֣סֶד וֶאֱמֶ֔ת

and,you_will_do with=me kindness and,faithfulness

Consider again how you translated kindness in Gen 19:19; 20:13; 21:23; 24:12, 14, 27, 49; 32:10; 39:21; 40:14; 47:29, and how you translated faithfulness in Gen 24:27, 48, 49; 32:10; 42:16; 47:29.

אַל־נָ֥א תִקְבְּרֵ֖נִי

not now bury,me

Make sure your translation of bury me does not sound like Israel would still be alive when he was buried. Alternate translation: [Please promise that you will not bury my bones]

בְּמִצְרָֽיִם

in,Egypt

Alternate translation: [here in the land of Egypt]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

47:29-31 bury me with my ancestors: Cp. 49:29-33. Jacob wanted to be buried with Abraham and Isaac in the cave of Machpelah (see study note on 49:29-33; see 23:1-20; 25:7-10; 35:27-29).
• Put your hand under my thigh: This custom (cp. 24:1-9 and study note on 24:2) was a serious oath to carry on the covenant, which had as its main promise innumerable descendants in the Promised Land.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.OET logo mark
