TSNTyndale Study Notes:

7:1-52 This chapter is another account of Jesus during a Jewish festival, the Festival of Shelters. Jesus used elements of the festival to reveal his true identity to his Jewish compatriots and to show that he had fulfilled the festival’s essential meaning (see 7:37-39; 8:12).

TTNTyndale Theme Notes:

Misunderstanding in the Gospel of John

Throughout John’s Gospel, people encountering Jesus misunderstood him (see John 3:4; 4:11, 33; 7:35; 11:12-13). They were divided over the question of Jesus’ identity. When they perceived what he was really saying, some wanted to arrest him while others wanted to become his followers (7:40-44). Only later, when Jesus’ disciples had received the Spirit, did they really understand his significance (see 16:12-13).

The world still lives in darkness and cannot understand the realities of life or of God (1:5, 10). Divine revelation is inaccessible to the world. In fact, when the light of God penetrates the darkness, exposing the ugliness of the world, many people flee deeper into the darkness because they prefer it to the light (3:19-20). Only the transforming power of God’s Spirit can provide understanding and help people see clearly as children of God (3:21; 8:12; 12:35-36, 46).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

εἶπον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς ἑαυτούς

said therefore the Jews to themselves

Here, the Jews refers to the Jewish leaders. See how you translated this term in 1:19.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

οὗτος

this_‹one›

Here, John records the Jewish leaders saying this one as a disrespectful way to refer to Jesus and to avoid saying his name. See how you translated this phrase in verse 15. Alternate translation: “this so-and-so”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

μὴ εἰς τὴν διασπορὰν τῶν Ἑλλήνων μέλλει πορεύεσθαι, καὶ διδάσκειν τοὺς Ἕλληνας?

not to the dispersion ˱of˲_the Greeks ˱he˲_/is/_going /to_be/_going and /to_be/_teaching the Greeks

The Jewish leaders are using the form of a question to add emphasis. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this type of question by translating these words as a statement or an exclamation and communicate the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: “Surely he is not about to go to the dispersion of the Greeks and to teach the Greeks!”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τὴν διασπορὰν

the dispersion

Here, dispersion refers to the Jewish people who were spread across the Greek-speaking world that was outside of the land of Israel. If this might confuse your readers, you could express the meaning explicitly. Alternate translation: “the Jews who are dispersed” or “the Jews who are scattered”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τὴν διασπορὰν τῶν Ἑλλήνων

the dispersion ˱of˲_the Greeks

The Jews used the phrase of the Greeks to describe the location where the Jews were dispersed. If this use of the possessive form would be confusing in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: “the Jews who are dispersed among the Greeks”
