SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 6:1–19: Here are several practical admonitions and warnings

This section contains practical warnings about four specific and unrelated areas of behavior. The first warning is about the danger of cosigning a loan for another person (6:1–5). The second paragraph speaks highly of the diligence of the ant and warns against laziness (6:6–11). The third paragraph briefly describes the behavior of a worthless scoundrel (6:12–15). The last paragraph is in the form of a numerical proverb and lists seven sins that the LORD hates (6:16–19).

Some other headings for this section are:

More Warnings (GNT)

Dangers of Being Foolish (NCV)

Warnings Against Folly (NIV)

Paragraph 6:12–15

The first two terms in 6:12a are synonymously parallel. They identify the kind of person that is described in this paragraph. The next six terms or phrases in 6:12b–14b are also parallel. They describe the behavior of this person in more detail. The NIV and NJB distinguish 6:14b as the main clause of 6:12b–14b, telling what this kind of person does. Although the verbal descriptive phrases in 6:12b–14a are all participles as opposed to 6:14b, which is a finite verb, and although Toy (page 125) mentions a translation such as NIV as a possibility, other versions and scholars all seem to understand the six phrases as equally describing the person identified in 6:12a. The paragraph concludes in 6:15 with a description of his punishment.

6:15

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

15aTherefore calamity will come upon him suddenly;

15b in an instant he will be shattered beyond recovery.

6:15a–b

(combined/reordered)

suddenly; in an instant: These two terms are synonyms. Another way to express this idea is:

without warning (GNT)

6:15a

Therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly;

Therefore: This word expresses the conclusion or result of the scoundrel’s evil conduct. This relationship may also be expressed as:

That is why… (GW)

Because of this,… (GNT)

calamity will come upon him: The word that the BSB translates as calamity could also be translated as “disaster” (NIV) or “destruction.” (See the note on 1:26a–b.) The NLT expresses this idea as a verb:

they will be destroyed (NLT)

6:15b

in an instant he will be shattered beyond recovery.

he will be shattered beyond recovery: The word that the BSB translates as shattered is literally “broken in pieces.” Here it refers figuratively to punishment. It is implied that the one who will punish or destroy the wicked person is the LORD.

The clause he will be shattered is passive. If your language does not use passive constructions, you may need to use an active verb and make the agent explicit. For example:

The LORD will destroy them suddenly

beyond recovery: The nature of the disaster or punishment is not specified, except that it will be beyond recovery. This phrase suggests that the punishment may be sudden death. The GNT has evidently followed this interpretation and has translated this as “fatally wounded.” However, it is recommended that you translate this with a more general expression if possible. For example:

no one can help them (NCV)

they will be…left without a hope (CEV)

beyond healing (RSV)

General Comment on 6:15a–b

In some languages, it may be more effective to combine and/or reorder the parallel parts of this verse. For example:

they will be struck by sudden disaster and left without a hope (CEV)

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

אֵיד֑וֹ & יִ֝שָּׁבֵ֗ר

disaster_of,his & broken

Although the terms his and he are masculine, Solomon is using the words in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use phrases that make this clear. Alternate translation: “that person’s calamity … that person will be broken”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

אֵיד֑וֹ

disaster_of,his

See how you translated the abstract noun calamity in [1:26](../01/26.md).

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

יָב֣וֹא

come

Here Solomon speaks of calamity occurring as if it were a person who could come to someone else. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “will occur”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

יִ֝שָּׁבֵ֗ר וְאֵ֣ין מַרְפֵּֽא

broken and,there_[will]_not_[be] healing

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “the calamity will break him and he will not heal”
