48:1-22 In blessing Ephraim and Manasseh, Jacob reached out by faith for the promise to be continued, having learned that God’s ways are not always the ways of men. Out of Jacob’s long life, the writer to the Hebrews selected the blessing of Joseph’s sons as his great act of faith (Heb 11:21). As Jacob acted in light of God’s will, the primary blessing was again given to the younger instead of the older son, but without scheming and its bitter results.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations
וַיַּגֵּ֣ד לְיַעֲקֹ֔ב וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הִנֵּ֛ה בִּנְךָ֥ יוֹסֵ֖ף בָּ֣א אֵלֶ֑יךָ
and,told to,Jacob and=he/it_said see/lo/see! son_of,your Yōşēf/(Joseph) he/it_came to,you
Consider whether it is better in your language to use a direct or indirect quote here.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
וַיִּתְחַזֵּק֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל
and,summoned_~_strength Yisrael
Consider whether you language has a similar idiom that fits well here. Also, make sure it is clear in your translation or in a footnote that Israel (verses 2, 8, 11, 13-14, 21) and Jacob (verses 2-3) refer to the same person, not two different people. Alternate translation: [Then Israel rallied his strength] or [Immediately Israel, who was lying down, used all his strength]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב עַל־הַמִּטָּֽה
and=he/it_sat_down//remained//lived on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,bed
The context (verse 12) shows that Jacob sat on the edge of his bed with his feet resting on the floor and his knees facing Joseph’s sons. Also, for some languages it may be necessary (for politeness) to make it explicit that they greeted each other first before continuing their conversation. Do what is best in your language. Alternate translation: [and sat up on the edge of his bed and they greeted each other]
