TSNTyndale Study Notes:

49:1-28 Jacob, by faith and as God’s spokesman, looked forward to Israel’s settlement in the land, and beyond that to the glorious future. Here at the end of the patriarchal age, he foretold what would happen to each tribe as he evaluated his sons one by one, just as Noah had done at the end of the primeval era (cp. 9:25-27). The character and acts of each ancestor affected the lives of his descendants (Exod 20:5-6; 34:6-7; Num 14:18; Jer 32:18).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

וַיִּקְרָ֥א יַעֲקֹ֖ב אֶל בָּנָ֑יו

and=he/it_called Yaakob to/towards sons,his

The events in chapter 49 may have occurred on the same day as the events in chapter 48, or not very long after that. Consider again how you translated called for in the book of Genesis. See Gen 12:18; 14:14; 20:2, 8-9; 24:57-58; 26:9; 27:1, 42; 28:1; 31:4; 39:14; 41:8, 14; 46:33; 47:29; 49:1.

Note 1 topic: writing-quotations

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר

and=he/it_said

Consider whether or not it is better in your language to begin a new sentence here.

Note 2 topic: writing-poetry

הֵאָֽסְפוּ֙

gather_around

Much of what Jacob says to his sons in verses 1-27 is Hebrew poetry, which is characterized by the use of parallelisms and metaphors to emphasize important points. Many translations put these verses in poetry format (starting here); many others use regular paragraph formatting. Do what is best in your language. For a complete list of verses that some translations treat as poetry in the book of Genesis, see the introduction to the book. Alternate translation: “Gather yourselves together before me,”

וְאַגִּ֣ידָה לָכֶ֔ם

and,tell to/for=you_all

Alternate translation: “and I will declare to you” or “so that I can inform you”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

אֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁר יִקְרָ֥א אֶתְכֶ֖ם

DOM which/who he/it_called/named DOM,you_all

Much of what Jacob prophesies in this chapter about his sons also applies to their descendants. Some translation teams may prefer to put that information in a footnote rather than make it explicit in the text. Do what is best in your language. Also see how you translated meet in Gen 42:4, 38.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

בְּאַחֲרִ֥ית הַיָּמִֽים

in=end/latter the=days

In this context, this phrase refers to a period of years in the future. Consider what is the best way to communicate that in your language. Alternate translation: “in the days ahead.” or “in future days”
