Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

Your fingers on your enemies’ throat,
while your brothers honor you.

home fresh from the kill, my son.

he’ll keep a firm grip on the command staff
Until the ultimate ruler comes
and the nations obey him.
He’ll tie up his donkey to the grapevine,
his purebred prize to a sturdy branch.
He will wash his shirt in wine
and his cloak in the blood of grapes,
His eyes will be darker than wine,
his teeth whiter than milk.

49:1-28 Jacob, by faith and as God’s spokesman, looked forward to Israel’s settlement in the land, and beyond that to the glorious future. Here at the end of the patriarchal age, he foretold what would happen to each tribe as he evaluated his sons one by one, just as Noah had done at the end of the primeval era (cp. 9:25-27). The character and acts of each ancestor affected the lives of his descendants (Exod 20:5-6; 34:6-7; Num 14:18; Jer 32:18).
יְהוּדָ֗ה אַתָּה֙ יוֹד֣וּךָ אַחֶ֔יךָ
Yehuda you(ms) praise,you brothers,your
In the Hebrew text, the pronoun you is emphatic, and it has an emphatic position in the sentence. Consider what is the best way to communicate that emphasis in your language. Alternate translation: “Judah, you are the one whom your brothers will praise.” or “Judah, you and your descendants will be highly praised by your brothers and their descendants.”
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
יָדְךָ֖ בְּעֹ֣רֶף
hand,your in/on/at/with,neck
Consider what is the best way to translate this Hebrew idiom in your language. Also, if your translation includes Judah’s descendants in the previous sentence, make sure that the pronouns your and you are plural in this sentence. Alternate translation: “You will be victorious over” or “You will defeat”
אֹיְבֶ֑יךָ
enemies,your
Alternate translation: “those who are against you.” or “your adversaries.”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person
בְּנֵ֥י אָבִֽיךָ
sons_of I_will_show=you(ms)
Make sure that your translation of your father refers to Jacob. Alternate translation: “Your brothers”
Note 3 topic: translate-symaction
יִשְׁתַּחֲוּ֥וּ לְךָ֖
bow_down to/for=yourself(m)
Consider again how you translated bow down in the book of Genesis. See Gen 18:2; 19:1; 22:5; 23:7, 12; 24:26, 48, 52; 27:29; 33:3, 6-7; 37:7, 9-10; 42:6; 43:26, 28; 47:31; 48:12; 49:8. Also see how you translated a similar phrase in Gen 17:3, 17. Alternate translation: “and their descendants will bow themselves before you and your descendants in submission.”
