Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

17:1-27 God now gave the family signs that the promises would be fulfilled. He changed Abram’s name to Abraham (17:1-8), instituted the rite of circumcision as the sign of the covenant (17:9-14, 23-27), and changed Sarai’s name to Sarah (17:15-22).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-symaction

וַיִּפֹּ֥ל אַבְרָ֖ם עַל־פָּנָ֑יו

and,fell Avram on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in his/its=faces/face

Make sure that the translation of this clause does not sound like Abram fell down accidentally. Rather, he intentionally threw himself to the ground out of deep respect for God. Alternate translation: “Then Abram prostrated himself before God to show him respect,”

Note 2 topic: writing-quotations

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אִתּ֛וֹ אֱלֹהִ֖ים לֵאמֹֽר

and=he/it_spoke with=him/it ʼElohīm to=say

Some translations omit saying here because it is not natural in those languages. Do what is best in your language. Alternate translation: “and God spoke to him and said,” or “and God continued speaking with Abram,” or “and God added,”
