The children are mentioned to emphasize that all the members of the families were well-provided for, including the youngest ones. Make sure it is clear in your translation that Joseph was providing food for everyone in each family, not just the children. Alternate translation: “food, based on how many children were in each family.” or “as much food as each family needed to feed all the children in their family.”
