6:14 The reader might have expected the word ‘ark’ here, but sadly the Latin word ‘arca’ meaning ‘large box, chest’ led to the English word ‘ark’ being invented, and why we can’t use it here, is that now for most English readers, they picture a large boat in their minds when they hear that word. If you think about the ‘ark of the covenant’ that uses the same word, hopefully you can understand how anything like a ‘boat’ is the wrong word picture, hence we’ve gone back to translating the actual Hebrew word here.

6:14 The large boat (traditionally rendered ark) was a long rectangular barge designed for survival, not for navigation. The Hebrew word tebah is used again only of the basket in which the baby Moses was floated on the Nile (Exod 2:3, 5).
• cypress wood: It is not clear what kind of wood this was. It was possibly from a conifer, such as cypress.

The term ark is general and refers to a chest/box that is closed on all sides, including the top. In this case, the ark was a very large boat that people and many animals lived in for a year. It had no motor, no oars, no sail and no rudder. Since this was a unique, one-of-a-kind boat that may already be well-known as the ark in the receptor language area, some translations transliterate (copy or borrow) the word ark throughout Genesis. Decide what is best for your translation. Alternate translation: “a very large houseboat”

It is not certain what kind of wood this was, so many translations transliterate (copy or borrow) the Hebrew word gopher. Some Bible scholars think it was cypress wood. Alternate translation: “from cypress wood which is good for building boats.”

However, many translations are more specific than that here and refer to “pitch” or “tar” or some other material made from tree resin or sap that can seal a boat well and keep it from leaking. Alternate translation: “with pitch to keep water out.” or “with pitch to keep the boat from leaking.”
