TSNTyndale Study Notes:

48:1-47 Moab, one of two nations descended from Abraham’s nephew Lot (Gen 19:36-38), was the next nation brought to trial in the Lord’s courtroom (cp. Isa 15–16). Moab’s territory lay between the Arnon River and the Zered Brook east of the Dead Sea. At the time, the Moabites felt self-assured because they were relatively free from the military reach of the Babylonians. However, the Lord found the Moabites to be greedy and cruel, and their worship was vicious and sensuous.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) The horn of Moab has been hacked off; its arm has been broken

(Some words not found in UHB: cut_off horn Mōʼāⱱ and, arm, his broken declares YHWH )

Both of these statements mean the same thing. Here “horn” and “arm” represent power. To have these hacked off or broken means to lose one’s power. If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “Moab has become weak; the people are not able to fight anymore” (See also: figs-metonymy and figs-activepassive)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

(Occurrence 0) this is Yahweh’s declaration

(Some words not found in UHB: cut_off horn Mōʼāⱱ and, arm, his broken declares YHWH )

Yahweh speaks of himself by name to express the certainty of what he is declaring. See how you translated this in Jeremiah 1:8. Alternate translation: “this is what Yahweh has declared” or “this is what I, Yahweh, have declared”
