Creation, rest and the Sabbath command

OET Gen 2:1-3

2 So the heavens and the earth were completed, along with everything in them. 2 By the seventh day God had finished his work, so he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he’d done.[ref] 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and declared it to be different from the other days, because on that first Saturday, he rested from all his work of creating.

Yeshua/Jesus, the Sabbath and doing good

OET Mark 2:23-28

23 Then it so happened that Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) and his followers passed through some fields of grain on some days of rest. As they went through, they plucked off some heads of grain,[ref] 24 and some members of the Farisaios party said, “Hey, it’s breaking the law to harvest grain on a rest day!”

25 “You’ve read yourselves,” Yeshua replied, “what David did when he and his men were hungry. 26 They went into God’s tent and ate the sacred bread representing God’s presence. Only the priests were allowed to eat that,[ref] and yet David even gave some to his companions!” 27 Then he told the Farisaios, “The days of rest were created for people, not people for the rest days. 28 So I, the son of humanity, have authority also over the day of rest.”

OET Mark 3:1-6

3 Again at another time, Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) went into the Jewish meeting hall and there was a man there with a curled-up hand. 2 The religious leaders there were watching him closely to see if he would heal the man on the rest day, and then if he did, they would have a case against him. 3 Then Yeshua said to the man with the flawed hand, “Stand up there in the middle.” 4 And he asked the leaders, “Is it allowable to do good on the rest day, or only to do evil? To save life, or to kill?” But they didn’t reply.

5 After angrily looking around at them, grieving at their complete lack of compassion, he told the man, “Open up your hand!” The man stretched out his fingers, and his hand became totally normal. 6 But the Farisaios quickly left, and meeting with King Herodes’s (Herod) supporters, they conspired to kill Yeshua.

OET Luke 13:10-17

10 On the Rest Days, Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) was teaching in one of the Jewish meeting halls 11 and, look, a woman who’d had a spirit of sickness for eighteen years was there. She was bent over and unable to stand up straight 12 and when Yeshua saw her, he called out, “Woman, your disease has been sent away.” 13 Then he placed his hands on her and she was immediately restored and started praising God.

14 But the hall leader was angry because it was the Rest Day when Yeshua had healed her and started telling the crowd, “There’s six days when it’s fine to work, so come then to be healed—not on the Rest Day!”[ref]

15 “You hypocrites!” Yeshua responded. “Doesn’t every one of you untie his ox on the Rest Day, or untie the donkey from the feeding trough and lead it away for a drink? 16 This woman is a descendant of Avraham who’s been handicapped by Satan for eighteen years, and yet you say that it’s wrong to break that bond on the Rest Day!” 17 When he said that, the people opposing him were disgraced and all the crowd was excited about the wonderful things he was doing.

Finding rest and considering special days

OET Mat 11:25-30

25 At that time, Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) said, “I’m acknowledging you, father, master of heaven and earth, because you hid these things from ‘wise’ and ‘intelligent’ people and revealed them to the ‘naive’. 26 Yes, father, because that was your desire.

27 My father has given control of everything over to me,[ref] but no one really knows the son except the father, and no one really knows the father except the son and anyone who the son wants to tell about him.[ref]

28 Come to me all of you who are tired and feel overloaded, and I’ll help you relax. 29 You can take on my workload and learn from me, because I’m gentle and humble, and your souls will be able to relax,[ref] 30 because my workload is easy, and the load I’ll leave on your shoulders is light.

OET Rom 14:1-6

14 Accept others who are faltering in their faith, without highlighting their wrong ideas.[ref] 2 Some people think it’s ok to eat anything, while others who are faltering will only eat vegetables. 3 The one who eats anything shouldn’t despise the other, and the one who doesn’t eat meat shouldn’t condemn the other, because both are accepted by God. 4 Who are you to judge someone else’s house servants? Their own master will judge if they stand or fall, and they’ll stand because the master is able to help them.

5 Similarly, some people consider one day to be more important than some other day, yet others consider every day to be alike. Each person should be fully convinced in their own mind. 6 Anyone who considers a certain day to be special is thinking about Yahweh. Likewise, anyone who’s eating meat is eating to serve Yahweh, and gives thanks to God. The person who doesn’t eat meat is declining it in order to serve Yahweh, and gives thanks to God.

OET Col 2:16-23

16 Don’t let anyone judge you all about what you eat or drink, or about observing feasts or holidays or days of rest.[ref] 17 They’re just shadows of what’s coming, but the body causing the shadow is that of the messiah. 18 Don’t let anyone be disqualifying you all with their apparent humility and worshipping the messengers, telling you what they’ve seen and being arrogant and vain about their earthly minds. 19 They’re not listening to the head which controls all the joints and ligaments of the body and holds it all together as God causes it to grow.[ref]

20 If you’ve died to worldly principles, then why are you letting yourselves be indoctrinated with worldly living: 21 ‘Don’t hold this. Don’t taste that. Don’t touch this.’ 22 No, All those rules lead to corruption when they’re used as the commands and teaching of humans. 23 They seem to be wise and make you more religious or humble as you strictly obey them, but don’t honour the realities of our worldly desires.

OET Heb 4:1-11

4 That’s why we might be afraid: because although we had a promise to enter his rest, some of you might fail to achieve it, 2 because we’ve already had the good message preached to us just like them, but the message they heard didn’t benefit them because they weren’t united in faith with the others who listened. 3 So those of us who believed are entering that rest, as he said:

‘As I promised in my severe anger,

They will never enter into my rest.’[ref]

And yet he’s had it ready since the creation of the world. 4 Because somewhere he’s spoken about the seventh day saying:

‘And on the seventh day God rested from all his works.’[ref]

5 And also:

‘They will never enter my rest.’[ref]

6 Therefore because it’s being retained for some people to still come into it, and those who previously had the good message preached to them didn’t come in because of their disbelief, 7 God designated a certain day saying:

‘Today if you all hear his voice,

Don’t harden your hearts.’[ref]

8 Because if Yehoshua (Joshua) had given them rest,[ref] God wouldn’t be speaking afterwards about another day. 9 So then, a time of rest is being retained for God’s people, 10 because anyone having come into their rest, also rests from their works, just as God rested from his own works.[ref] 11 Therefore we should be earnest about entering that rest, in case someone else falls by following our example of disbelief,
