OET (OET-LV) And_he/it_said Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) to/for_why did_you_all_do_harm to_me to_announce to_the_man another to/for_you_all [does]_a_brother.
OET (OET-RV) “Why did you all treat me badly by telling the man you have a younger brother?” their father Yisra’el asked.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל
and=he/it_said Yisrael
If it is not clear that Israel (verse 6) and “their father” (verse 2) refer to the same person, you could include “their father” here in your translation or in a footnote. See what you did for a similar case in Gen 42:5.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
לָמָ֥ה הֲרֵעֹתֶ֖ם לִ֑י לְהַגִּ֣יד
to/for,why? treat_~_badly to=me to=announce
Jacob uses a rhetorical question here to scold his sons and to show how upset he is. Consider what is the best way to communicate that in your language. Alternate translation: “Why did you cause distress for me by telling” or “You caused me a lot of distress because you told”
לָאִ֔ישׁ
to_the,man
See how you translated the man in verses 3 and 5. Alternate translation: “that man” or “that governor”
הַע֥וֹד לָכֶ֖ם אָֽח
?,another to/for=you_all brother
If you translate this rhetorical question as a statement, make sure that you end it with a period or exclamation point. Alternate translation: “that you have another brother!”
43:1-7 As the famine continued, Jacob’s family needed more grain, but they could not return to Egypt without Benjamin (42:16, 20). Jacob realized that he was in a bind; he needed more food but was loath to lose Benjamin.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.
