OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_said Yəhūdāh what will_we_say to_master_my what will_we_speak and_how will_we_justify_ourselves the_ʼₑlhīmv he_has_found DOM the_guilt your_servants see_we [are]_slaves to_master_my both we as_well_as [the_one]_who it_was_found the_cup in_his/its_hand.

OET (OET-RV) “What can we say to my master?” Yehudah answered. “What words could we speak? How could we possibly justify ourselves? God has exposed the sin of your servants. So now, we are slaves for my master—both we and the one who was found with the cup.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-quotations

and=he/it_said Yehuda

Alternate translation: “Judah answered,”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

what? say to,lord,my

Judah uses a series of rhetorical questions in this verse to express how upset he is about what has happened and to emphasize that there is nothing that they can say to convince Joseph that they are innocent. Consider what is the best way to communicate those things in your language.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

what? what? speak

Alternate translation: “We cannot explain this.”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

and,how justify

Alternate translation: “We do not know how to show to you that we did not do this.” or “There is no way we can show to you that we are innocent.”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

the=ʼₑlhīmv he/it_found DOM guilt your=servants

Judah refers to himself and his brothers as your servants to show humility and to honor Joseph. Also, Judah is probably referring here to the sin of selling their brother Joseph into slavery years ago. You could include that information in a footnote. Alternate translation: “God has exposed our guilt for our past sin.” or “God is punishing us, your humble servants, for our past sin” or “God is using this occasion to punish us for our past sin.”

Note 6 topic: translate-honorifics

behold,we slaves to,lord,my

Alternate translation: “Here we all are, ready to be servants for you, sir,” or “So now, sir, we are all here to be your servants,”

also/yet we also/yet which/who

Alternate translation: “including the man”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

which/who he/it_was_found the,cup in=his/its=hand

Consider what is the best way to translate this passive clause in your language. Alternate translation: “who was found with your cup in his grain sack” or “in whose grain bag your house-servant found the cup.” or “whom your house-servant found with your cup in his sack”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

44:16 Judah again spoke for the group.
• God is punishing us for our sins: God was completing the work of repentance in their hearts. Judah again proposed that they all be punished. Benjamin was seemingly guilty of this theft, but all of the others were guilty of sin against Joseph. They preferred not returning to Jacob at all versus seeing his grief at the loss of Benjamin (44:34).

OET (OET-RV) “What can we say to my master?” Yehudah answered. “What words could we speak? How could we possibly justify ourselves? God has exposed the sin of your servants. So now, we are slaves for my master—both we and the one who was found with the cup.”

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.
