OET (OET-LV)And_take also DOM this_[one] from presence_of_me and_comes_to_him harm and_bring_down DOM gray_hairs_my in/on/at/with_sorrow sheol_to.

OET (OET-RV)So if you also take this son away and something happened to him, then you’d bring my gray head down to the grave in misery.’

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / hypo

וּלְקַחְתֶּ֧ם גַּם אֶת זֶ֛ה מֵעִ֥ם פָּנַ֖י

and,take also/yet DOM this from, presence_of,me

Consider what is the best way to translate the hypothetical sentence in this verse. Make sure all the parts of the sentence fit together well. Alternate translation: “So if you also take this son away from me,”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וְקָרָ֣הוּ אָס֑וֹן

and,comes_to,him harm

See how you translated a similar clause in Gen 42:38. Alternate translation: “and something terrible happens to him,” or “and if anything bad happens to him,”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וְהֽוֹרַדְתֶּ֧ם אֶת שֵׂיבָתִ֛י בְּרָעָ֖ה

and,bring_~_down DOM gray_hairs,my in/on/at/with,sorrow

See how you translated bring my gray head down in Gen 42:38. Alternate translation: “you will cause me, your elderly father, to grieve so deeply that I will die and go down” or “you will cause me, your elderly father, so much sorrow that I will die and go down”

Note 4 topic: translate-unknown

שְׁאֹֽלָה

sheol,to

Sheol is the Hebrew name for the world of the dead, that is, the place where the spirits of all people go after they die. You could put that information in a footnote. Your translation of Sheol should not refer to hell or a place of punishment. Some translations have “the grave” here, but that leaves out the idea of an afterlife that this sentence implies.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

44:1-34 The brothers appeared to have changed; they had shown remorse over what they had done to Joseph, and they showed integrity in returning the money and in bringing Benjamin. Given a chance to get rid of Rachel’s other son, Benjamin, would they do it?
