Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). Part Seven of the book of Isaiah ends with an oracle that makes a final exhortation to the people. Yahweh speaks first, calling on them to come to him and enjoy wonderful food freely, “without silver, and without price.” He doesn’t primarily mean actual food, although he has promised throughout this part of the book that he will provide for their needs. Rather, he wants them to hear, understand, and embrace his offer to renew his covenant with them so that they can be restored to their land and be a “witness to the peoples” there. The prophet speaks next, calling on his fellow exiles one more time to “return to Yahweh” and receive his forgiveness. Finally, Yahweh speaks again, assuring the people that while they may not always understand what he is doing, his purposes will be accomplished as surely as the rain and snow water the ground and make the plants grow. The oracle ends with a reprise of an image that has recurred throughout Part Seven, that of a highway through the desert that will allow the exiles to return home. Now, as the Israelites travel this route, the desert shrubs are transformed into hardwood trees that clap their hands in celebration. The mountains and hills burst into singing. This is the joy that Yahweh is inviting his people to experience in a restored relationship with him. 1. Yahweh invites the people into a renewed relationship with him (1–5) 2. The prophet urges the people to return to Yahweh (6–7) 3. Yahweh promises to do what he has said and bring the people back home (8–13)
