TSNTyndale Study Notes:

11:1 stump . . . shoot . . . new Branch . . . from the old root: This new growth refers to the continuity of David’s royal family line despite its virtual cessation during the Exile (see also 6:13; 39:7; Rev 22:16). The new growth from the old roots would not be like the former frail and unjust descendants of David (see Isa 4:2). Jesus, the Messiah, is the final fulfillment.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) A shoot will sprout from the stump of Jesse … a branch out of his roots will bear fruit

(Some words not found in UHB: and,come_out shoot from,stump Yishay and,branch from,roots,his bear_fruit )

Isaiah speaks of Jesse and his descendants as if they were a tree that had been cut down. Both of these phrases tell about a descendant of Jesse who would be king. Alternate translation: “As a shoot sprouts out of a tree stump, so a descendant of Jesse will become king over what remains of Israel” (See also: figs-metaphor)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) the stump of Jesse

(Some words not found in UHB: and,come_out shoot from,stump Yishay and,branch from,roots,his bear_fruit )

A stump is what remains of a tree after it is chopped down. The “stump of Jesse” represents what was left of the kingdom that Jesse’s son David was once king of.
