TSNTyndale Study Notes:

30:1 The wisdom of the people of Judah was not directed by God’s Spirit (cp. 11:2); instead, they had formed alliances that God did not approve of. Although the Assyrian attack on Jerusalem was overwhelming, making an alliance with Egypt demonstrated that the leaders of Judah depended on human resources for their protection rather than on God. Fortunately, Hezekiah later had a change of heart (see chs 36–37).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) the rebellious children

(Some words not found in UHB: woe sons rebellious declares YHWH for=doing plan and=not from,me and,to,make alliance and=not my=breath/wind/spirit so_as_to add sin on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in sin )

Yahweh speaks about his people as if they were his children.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

(Occurrence 0) this is Yahweh’s declaration

(Some words not found in UHB: woe sons rebellious declares YHWH for=doing plan and=not from,me and,to,make alliance and=not my=breath/wind/spirit so_as_to add sin on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in sin )

Yahweh speaks of himself by name to express the certainty of what he is declaring. Alternate translation: “this is what Yahweh has declared” or “this is what I, Yahweh, have declared”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

(Occurrence 0) They make plans, but not from me

(Some words not found in UHB: woe sons rebellious declares YHWH for=doing plan and=not from,me and,to,make alliance and=not my=breath/wind/spirit so_as_to add sin on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in sin )

This can be reworded so that If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word plans, you can express the same idea with the verb “plan.” Alternate translation: “They plan to do things, but they do not ask me what I want them to do”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) but they were not directed by my Spirit

(Some words not found in UHB: woe sons rebellious declares YHWH for=doing plan and=not from,me and,to,make alliance and=not my=breath/wind/spirit so_as_to add sin on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in sin )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “but my Spirit did not direct them”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) they add sin to sin

(Some words not found in UHB: woe sons rebellious declares YHWH for=doing plan and=not from,me and,to,make alliance and=not my=breath/wind/spirit so_as_to add sin on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in sin )

Continuing to sin is spoken of as if sins were objects that could be stacked on one another. Alternate translation: “they continue to sin more and more”
