TSNTyndale Study Notes:

47:1–48:22 Two conclusions can be drawn from the preceding evidence that the Lord alone is God: (1) Babylon’s great pride is foolishness (47:1-15); (2) Israel needs to pay attention to the word of the Lord (48:1-22).

47:1-4 In this taunt against Babylon, the queen of nations is humiliated, forced to work as a servant girl.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

General Information:

In this chapter, Yahweh speaks to Babylon about her downfall as if she were a queen who is humiliated. (See also: figs-personification)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) sit in the dust, virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground … daughter of the Chaldeans.

(Some words not found in UHB: come_down and,sit on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in dust virgin daughter_of Babel sit on_the,ground not throne daughter_of Kasdim that/for/because/then/when not longer called to/for=you(fs) tender and, delicate )

These two phrases mean basically the same thing. Sitting in the dust was a sign of humiliation. (See also: translate-symaction)

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) virgin daughter of Babylon … daughter of the Chaldeans

(Some words not found in UHB: come_down and,sit on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in dust virgin daughter_of Babel sit on_the,ground not throne daughter_of Kasdim that/for/because/then/when not longer called to/for=you(fs) tender and, delicate )

Both of these phrases refer to the city, Babylon, which is spoken of as if it were a daughter. That the city is a “daughter” indicates how people think fondly of her.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) without a throne

(Some words not found in UHB: come_down and,sit on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in dust virgin daughter_of Babel sit on_the,ground not throne daughter_of Kasdim that/for/because/then/when not longer called to/for=you(fs) tender and, delicate )

Here “throne” refers to the power to rule. Alternate translation: “without the power to rule”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) You will no longer be called dainty and delicate

(Some words not found in UHB: come_down and,sit on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in dust virgin daughter_of Babel sit on_the,ground not throne daughter_of Kasdim that/for/because/then/when not longer called to/for=you(fs) tender and, delicate )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “People will no longer call you dainty and delicate”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

(Occurrence 0) dainty and delicate

(Some words not found in UHB: come_down and,sit on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in dust virgin daughter_of Babel sit on_the,ground not throne daughter_of Kasdim that/for/because/then/when not longer called to/for=you(fs) tender and, delicate )

These two words share similar meanings. They describe one who is beautiful and lives in luxury. Alternate translation: “very beautiful” or “very luxurious”
