TSNTyndale Study Notes:

3:13 acknowledge your guilt . . . Admit that you rebelled . . . Confess that you refused to listen: Through these three elements of repentance, the people could demonstrate their willingness to receive the Lord’s salvation and restoration (Lev 26:40; Deut 30:1-5).

“Admit how you have sinned.” God was speaking to Israel.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) you have shared your ways with strangers under every leafy tree!

(Some words not found in UHB: only acknowledge guilt_of,your that/for/because/then/when in/on/at/with,LORD God_of,your rebelled and,scattered DOM favors_of,your to_the,strangers below/instead_of all/each/any/every tree/message green and,in/on/at/with,voice_of,my not obeyed declares_of YHWH )

The word “strangers” refers to foreign gods. God speaks of Israel worshiping foreign gods as if Israel were a woman who was having sex with strangers.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

(Occurrence 0) under every leafy tree

(Some words not found in UHB: only acknowledge guilt_of,your that/for/because/then/when in/on/at/with,LORD God_of,your rebelled and,scattered DOM favors_of,your to_the,strangers below/instead_of all/each/any/every tree/message green and,in/on/at/with,voice_of,my not obeyed declares_of YHWH )

People would worship idols under trees. The word “every” is a generalization used to show that the people of Israel worshiped many gods under many different trees.
