OET (OET-RV) All his other sons and all his daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted and said, “I will go down to my son in the grave mourning.” So his father wept for him.

uW Translation Notes:

וַיְמָאֵן֙ לְהִתְנַחֵ֔ם

and,refused to,comforted

Alternate translation: “but he did not want to be consoled” or “but he did not let them console him”

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

and=he/it_said

Consider whether or not it is better in your language to begin a new sentence here.

Note 1 topic: translate-unknown

כִּֽי אֵרֵ֧ד אֶל בְּנִ֛י אָבֵ֖ל שְׁאֹ֑לָה

that/for/because/then/when go_down to/towards son,my mourning sheol,to

Sheol is the Hebrew name for the world of the dead, that is, the place where the spirits of dead people lived. You could put that information in a footnote. Your translation of Sheol should not refer to hell or a place of punishment. Some translations have “the grave” here, but that leaves out the idea of an afterlife that this sentence implies. Alternate translation: “No, I will continue to mourn until I die and join my son down in Sheol.”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

37:31-35 The old family propensity for deception seized the brothers’ imagination. Jacob had killed a young goat to deceive Isaac (27:5-17); now Jacob’s sons deceived him with a goat (see study note on 30:34-36).
