OET (OET-LV) And_he/it_said to_them Rəʼūⱱēn do_not shed blood throw DOM_him/it into the_pit the_this which is_in_wilderness and_a_hand do_not stretch_out in_him/it so_as to_rescue DOM_him/it from_hand_of_their to_restore_him to his/its_father.
OET (OET-RV) “Don’t shed blood,” he continued. “Throw him into that pit in the wilderness, but don’t wound him.” He said this because he was planning to rescue Yosef later and return him home to their father.
Note 1 topic: writing-quotations
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֣ם ׀ רְאוּבֵן֮
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to,them Reuven not shed blood throw DOM=him/it to/towards the,pit the=this which/who [is]_in,wilderness and,a_hand not lay in=him/it that rescue DOM=him/it from,hand_of,their to,restore,him to/towards his/its=father )
Some translations do not include this phrase, possibly because Reuben is still speaking to the same people. However, he may have paused between [verses 21](../37/21.md) and [22](../37/22.md) to see the effect of what he said in [verse 21](../37/21.md). Also, the repeated quote margin helps emphasize what he says in [verse 22](../37/22.md). Alternate translation: [Then he added]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
אַל־תִּשְׁפְּכוּ־דָם֒
not not (Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to,them Reuven not shed blood throw DOM=him/it to/towards the,pit the=this which/who [is]_in,wilderness and,a_hand not lay in=him/it that rescue DOM=him/it from,hand_of,their to,restore,him to/towards his/its=father )
See how you translated the idiom shed blood in Genesis [9:6](../09/06.md). Alternate translation: [Do not kill him]
הַשְׁלִ֣יכוּ אֹת֗וֹ אֶל־הַבּ֤וֹר הַזֶּה֙
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to,them Reuven not shed blood throw DOM=him/it to/towards the,pit the=this which/who [is]_in,wilderness and,a_hand not lay in=him/it that rescue DOM=him/it from,hand_of,their to,restore,him to/towards his/its=father )
See how you translated cistern in [verse 20](../37/20.md). Alternate translation: [Instead put him into this dry well]
אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to,them Reuven not shed blood throw DOM=him/it to/towards the,pit the=this which/who [is]_in,wilderness and,a_hand not lay in=him/it that rescue DOM=him/it from,hand_of,their to,restore,him to/towards his/its=father )
Consider again how you translated wilderness or “desert” in the book of Genesis. See [14:6](../14/06.md) (and note); [16:7](../16/07.md); [21:14](../21/14.md), [20–21](../21/20.md); [36:24](../36/24.md); [37:22](../37/22.md). Also see when it occurs as implied information in Genesis [12:9–10](../12/09.md); [13:1](../13/01.md), 3; [20:1](../20/01.md); [24:62](../24/62.md). Alternate translation: [here in the wilderness]
וְיָ֖ד אַל־תִּשְׁלְחוּ־ב֑וֹ
and,a_hand not (Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to,them Reuven not shed blood throw DOM=him/it to/towards the,pit the=this which/who [is]_in,wilderness and,a_hand not lay in=him/it that rescue DOM=him/it from,hand_of,their to,restore,him to/towards his/its=father )
The phrase lay a hand on is an idiom that emphasizes that they are not to harm him at all, not even in the smallest way. Alternate translation: [but you must not harm him in any way]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche
לְמַ֗עַן הַצִּ֤יל אֹתוֹ֙ מִיָּדָ֔ם
that (Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to,them Reuven not shed blood throw DOM=him/it to/towards the,pit the=this which/who [is]_in,wilderness and,a_hand not lay in=him/it that rescue DOM=him/it from,hand_of,their to,restore,him to/towards his/its=father )
See how you translated “rescued him from their hands” in [verse 21](../37/21.md). Alternate translation: [Reuben was planning to save him from them] or [He said that in order to save him from being killed by them]
לַהֲשִׁיב֖וֹ אֶל־אָבִֽיו
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to,them Reuven not shed blood throw DOM=him/it to/towards the,pit the=this which/who [is]_in,wilderness and,a_hand not lay in=him/it that rescue DOM=him/it from,hand_of,their to,restore,him to/towards his/its=father )
Make sure your translation of his father does not sound like Joseph had a different father than his brothers had. Alternate translation: [so that he could return him safely to his father] or [and take him back home to his father]
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
